Movie Reviews of The Company of WolvesMovie Review: Excellent film Summary: 5 Stars
FINALLY this is on DVD, or will be soon. What a beautiful and mysterious film this is. Based on several of Angela Carter's short stories(she also did the screen play for this film) this film deals with maturity, sex and mythology in a truly facinating way. One of the early films for Neil Jordon(Crying Game) and just brilliantly done. Full of magic the story has brief opening and closing sequences in the modern world while the majority takes place in the world of fairy tales. Using the the tale of Red Riding Hood as well as Werewolf mythos and the blooming maturity of a young girl the metaphors and mysterious landscape is truly marvelous. With dark and haunting score by George Fenton(Ever After) this film has everything for the true fan of what fairy tales are supposed to be, a lesson for those too foolish to listen. Angela Lansbury is Red's granny and plays a rolle not the norm for this icon of old and new Hollywood. It is truly an original film and not a story for young children."As your pretty, so be wise, wolves may lurk in any guise. Now, as then, tis simple truth; sweetest tongue has sharpest tooth."
Movie Review: you have such big teeth grandma... Summary: 5 Stars
Ok this is a great movie, the narrative implications are those of a coming of age and a young womans personal stages of sexual awareness. It begins at the funeral of the sister of a young woman and her journey to sexual maturity and the conflict is created by repeated use of Werewolves...sound strange, it is. This is a cautionary tale told to the young woman in allegory by her Grandma (while she is dreaming)the bottom line ...men are wolves...? your guess is as good as mine. It is a fairy tale and not true straight up horror but the Monsters are plenty horrific and we even are fed a segment complete with girl in red cloak as if the as if the connection to " Red Riding Hood " wasn't obvious enough. I love this movie because of it's stunning images and a healthy dose of real good Werewolves, never dull and just enough to ponder here plot wise that you may just miss some context if your not careful. I had heard of it for years and had some trouble getting it, but lucky you it now is available in a great looking DVD by Henstooth Video, a great film to watch with a significant other in the dark by a cozy fire...
Movie Review: Company of Wolves.... Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this movie in the theater when I was 15 years old and was entranced. The imagery of the forest is amazing. It looks exactly like a fairy tale forest should look...a dark fairy tale forest anyway.I'm not sure if at fifteen I knew this was a 'coming of age' cautionary tale telling young girls to be careful because dark things are in the wood. Dark things, that are not necessarily evil or that even if they are, you'll feel sorry for them as they steal your heart and childhood away. Even if I did know I wouldn't have listened *l* One of the best parts is a story told about another young girl who strayed from the path and who had become a wolf. The imagery shows the loss of her innocence as a beautiful close up of a white rose bleeding red, until it is a white rose no longer. This movie is practically unknown which is a crime because it's one of the best Gothic Horror movies I've ever seen. The slice and dice stuff can't compare and neither can most other stuff being put out. If you like Clive Barker, early Anne Rice, or Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu you will love this film!
Movie Review: It Takes More Than One Viewing.... Summary: 5 Stars
...to appreciate the film that is "The Company Of Wolves". I first saw this film in the 80's and was a little drawn back by the storytelling structure of the movie. However, I have come to appreciate this film as quite possibly one of the best Werewolf movies ever produced. Sarah Patterson (in one of her only roles) shines as the young girl with delusional fantasies. The story is about her, not about werewolves. It is about her own metamorphosis from a girl and into a young woman. This is not your bright and cheerful fairy-tale. This is a dark and sexualy motivated take on the classic tale of "Little Red Riding Hood". There is no other film quite like "The Company Of Wolves", with the exception of "Ginger Snaps" which is much more more contemporary than surreal. Neil Jordan has crafted a visually astonishing film that takes you on a metaphorical journey through a young girl's mind. What a trip! Angela Lansbury is perfect for the role of the Grandmother. It's a plus to have David Warner in it as well.
Movie Review: Lovely Horror Summary: 5 Stars
The widescreen DVD version is much better than the old VHS transfer in displaying the sumptuous visual style of this special film. Originally marketed in the US as a genre horror movie, Neil Jordan's "The Company of Wolves" is anything but commonplace. Based on stories in "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter, this film is a flood of imaginative and sensual images depicting the emerging adolescence of a thirteen year old girl. She dreams herself as a young villager in a fairy tale world built around an old well in the woods. The village is besieged by wolf attacks and at becomes apparent that these wolves turn into humans and vice versa. Ultimately the girl herself (or at least her childhood - you decide) becomes the victim of her own untamed wolf nature. Only marred by one gratuitous gore scene of a man peeling bloody skin from his face while turning into a wolf (using latex and prosthetic work popular at the time). Beautiful and rich music score by George Fenton.
