Movie Review: great movie for teens Summary: 4 Stars
My daughter rented this at Blockbuster and loves it so much, she had to have it.
Movie Review: I enjoyed it, I would have liked it more, had I not read the books. Summary: 3 Stars
I think the movie was very similar to the book, right down to the quotes. Massie was the PERFECT character in the movie, insecure, yet comes off as confident. She seemed even meaner in the movie than the books.
Alicia wasn't mean enough, and she didn't have black hair, but that's okay, she's still the prettiest. Massie's hair should have been lighter if you ask me. They didn't have Alicia mean enouh, so the comment about her boobs didn't work, they had no mention of them before then.
Dylan was perfect, with even more insecurity about her weight than in the books. However they failed to mention who her mother was.
Layne was SO ANNOYING. I guess that fit, because I disliked her in the books as well.
Claire also annoyed me. I think she played her part well, but the actress just didn't work.
Kristen was great in it too, but I always pictured her with brown hair...
They picked an ugly guy for Chris Abeley too. Todd wasn't witty enough.
Adding a bit with massie and the cake was brilliant. Much better than the ending in the book if you ask me. Massie totally makes herself more deep at the end.
I liked it, but it could be better I suppose. Layne irritated me so much I couldn't stand it. Her voice was annoying.
Movie Review: Superficial and stupid Summary: 2 Stars
If you want to see a well-made, well-written movie about the new girl trying to fit in with the popular crowd, please go watch "Mean Girls." It's funny, has characters you care about, and offers a real lesson about friendship.
I have no kids, but I do have an interest in teen movies and young adult lit, which is why I snatched this movie when I saw it in the library. Having read only one of the books, I should've known what I would encounter: a superficial story about a naive girl who tries to make a group of rich snots like her. Apparently the books are meant to mock those who are obsess with big labels and being the biggest bullies in school, but the satire is well hidden if that's the case. None of the characters' motivations made sense, and if I were Claire I'd be begging to be transferred to another school because of how mean Massie and her friends are. What I hated the most was that the movie seemed to want me to sympathize with Massie, as if this was just as much her story as Claire's. But I don't want to care about the bad guy - I want to see the bad guy get what's coming to her. Spoil alert: Massie never really gets what's coming to her.
Plus, there is a small scene where one of the girls' mother says that she won't buy her daughter clothes until she goes from a size 6 to a 4. So disturbing and wrong.
I would be kind of disappointed if a daughter of mine liked this movie or the book series.
