Movie Reviews of The Cincinnati KidMovie Review: A Lot Going For It Summary: 4 Stars
What has stuck with me all these years, since I saw it in the theater in 1965, wasn't the story but the title song by Ray Charles. I have never been able to get "The Cincinnati Kid" song out of my head.
Now, I understand a lady in Chicago, Denise Brigham, has recorded this song on a CD called "Hotel Lafayette," and the song sounds great! I'm glad others appreciate this great song.
I've also always enjoyed poker; Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson are two of my all- time favorite actors and I thought Tuesday Weld and Ann-Margaret were two of the most beautiful women in their day.....so, with all that, this movie has a lot going for it. Did I mention how great the transfer is on this DVD? Wow, this was nicely filmed!
Yes, the story doesn't have much spark until the poker showdown at the end of the movie, but that lasts at least 40 minutes! That ending is an excellent one, too.
Movie Review: classic poker film set in New Orleans Summary: 4 Stars
OK, first of all, I live in New Orleans and I play poker. This is a movie about playing poker in New Orleans, so naturally, I eventually came across this film. I really enjoyed it, but would agree that it is not the best movie ever. The scenes of New Orleans are great. The poker is so-so. It is all 5 card stud, a game no longer played. A nice treat was the feature commentary by Phil Gordon who has a few insights on "making the fish as uncomfortable as possible". Also there is a featurette about how to cheat at cards and trick shuffling by a pro that is impressive. Every poker player should watch this movie if only to get the references to it that pop up over and over again (see first few pages of Dan Harrington's tournement stategy book (forget which volume)).
Movie Review: A gunfight with cards Summary: 4 Stars
Is how Director Norman Jewison envisioned the final card scene. He succeeded. The film tends to drag through the second act but really pulls off a great finale. The dvd quality is good with a decent amount of extras but is probably more for the die hard Mcqueen or card game fan than anything.
Movie Review: Cincinnati Kid review Summary: 4 Stars
This film has a great cast: Steve McQueen as the "Kid", Edward G. Robinson as the "Man", Karl Mauldin as "Shooter" the card dealer, Ann Margret as the "Eye Candy", and an especially memorable performance by a young actor as the shoe shine boy.
Movie Review: McQeen, Margaret, Weld play their hands! Summary: 4 Stars
Another great McQueen film!! He is truly the epitome of "cool" and this picture features Tuesday Weld and Ann Margaret to boot! There was a surprise ending which really added to the overall affect of this vintage poker film.
