Movie Reviews of The Cincinnati KidMovie Review: It's how you play the game... Summary: 5 Stars
but it helps to win. This is an all time great Steve McQueen motion picture produced at the peak of his career. A poker game has been organized in New Orleans. It is like the Kentucky Derby of poker, with top players coming in from around the country. The game is five card stud. McQueen is the Cincinnati Kid, the local champion. Edward G. Robinson is the older grand master of poker, coming in from out of town. Walter Matheau is the Shooter, a dealer for the game. It is not just the game itself - people are making book on the outcome. Big amounts of money are involved. People's fortunes can be made or lost. One by one, players drop out until only the Kid and the Champion remain. It all comes down to a climatic hand. There is a song about this, which I am sure you will recognize when you see that last card turned up.
There is a poignant scene at the end between the Kid and the young boy.
I would note that Amazon has mixed reviews together, so some reviews are reviews for a collection, and some reviews are reviews for the motion picture. This review is for the motion picture.
Movie Review: Fantastic movie -- a poker playing " The Hustler" Summary: 5 Stars
WOW. If you like movies with real stars and not the current flavor of the month plastic surgery specials playing the title roles, this one is for you. Steve McQueen was perfect as the hungary kid on the way up. Ann-Margret was a babe (and sexy as all get out) as was Tuesday Weld. Edward G Robinson plays "The Man" as the smooth card shark--a gangster at the card table. And, of course, Karl Malden wonderful as the washed up ex "Kid". The Cincinnati Kid is the poker playing version of the famous Paul Newman movie The Hustler. They don't make them like they use too--that's for sure. Buy it and enjoy.
Movie Review: A great "oldie" Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased the Cincinnati Kid for my husband who has a large library of poker related movies and books. He said this one is still the best of even the much newer movies.
With the increase in the interest of poker today, this movie is great not only because of the content but also the old actors and actresses e.g. Steve McQueen, Edward G. Robinson, Ann Margaret, Joan Blondell. Even for the younger set who probably do not know these older actors the excitement of the poker game is still there.
Movie Review: WHO NEEDS TEXAS HOLD "EM Summary: 5 Stars
The Cincinnati Kid is the BEST poker movie made!! Steve McQueen, Karl Malden, Ann-Margret were great in this film but Edward G Robinson steals the show as Lancey Howard. For the young folk this movie was how professional poker was played in the back rooms and alleys.
Every poker fan should take his or her copy of "Rounders" and toss it in the back of your DVD collection and get a copy of "The Cincinnati Kid"
Movie Review: DVD Classic Movie Review Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD arrived on time and in the condition specified, and obviously, at a great price. The movie is a classic in my opinion, and could be watched by kids from early teens on! A teeny bit of violence and some sexual innuendo--other than much footage of Ann-Margret's cleavage, which today would be nothing.
