Movie Reviews of The Christmas ShoesMovie Review: THE CHRISTMAS SHOES - ROB LOWE (DVD) Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favourite films/Christmas Films of all time and what a tearjerker it is. It is a very poignant story about a mother dying of heart failure and her son wanting her to meet Jesus with a special pair of red shoes "The Christmas Shoes", that he wants to buy her for Christmas. His mission is to make sure she does, so not to give too much of the story away go out and buy this excellent tearjerker and make sure you have a box of tissues handy, you'll need them. I brought this DVD last year after seeing it on Sky Movies in 2004 in the UK. It is also part one of a trilogy of films and books, the others are The Christmas Blessing and The Christmas Hope. The song at the end of this film which is just so lovely is by Newsong and I have just managed to get it on two different CD's from the USA, the first CD contains The Christmas Shoes and other christmas songs and the other again by Newsong called The Christmas Hope contains a new version of The Christmas Shoes and adds the final two songs of the trilogy, The Christmas Blessing and The Christmas Hope to it with more new christmas songs. So go out and buy them too, you won't regret it I promise. I have brought a copy of this version of The Christmas Shoes from Amazon.com as it has extras on the DVD that the UK version does not. This is also part of my review that I used on Amazon.uk which has been published on the website over here, but felt I just had to do a review for Amazon.com too.
Movie Review: An Amazing Story With a Powerful Message Summary: 5 Stars
I was prepared for the tragic feeling of the movie, since it was based off the country song "The Christmas Shoes" which tells the tale of a little boy who wishes to purchase a special pair of shoes for his mother to visit Jesus in.
What I wasn't prepared for was the amazing acting skills of those that starred in the movie, and the creative storytelling that was used to turn this song into a story.
The little boys is a skilled and powerful actor who had us believing from start to finish that this was sincerely happening to him. A rarity in child acting. The story was a sad one, and doesn't end the way that the world would probably wish it to end, however my entire family enjoyed the tears and it brought us closer.
It also sent the message loud and clear that family is the most important thing, and while maybe a small town, sappy tear-jerker isn't everyone's favorite type, it sure was ours.
We long to live in a beautiful small town just as it appeared in the movie, and were thankful for the gift we received by learning a powerful message in the end.
We borrowed the movie from the library and watched it twice. We loved it so much we purchased it brand new (not used) from Amazon today.
Movie Review: Another Christmas DVD for the collection!!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you have heard the song, you will already know the ending of this movie. However, knowing that does not ruin this movie by any means. Kimberly Williams and Rob Lowe do this movie right. It is suitable for the entire family.
Integrating the two families involved in this story was done very well. At the same time, the story sticks to the song lyrics. The additional characters in the movies such as the store owner, the neighbor to Rob Lowe's character's mother, etc. are all nicely added.
While I agree that this movie could have been done in a shorter amount of time, it is still done very well. The song does not cover the child trying to get the money for the shoes. This was a nice addition to the story and compliments the song.
As a father, I was concerned how the scene with the mother (Kimberly Williams) dying was going to be completed. Without ruining the movie, I will say it was VERY tastefully done. My wife and I previewed it tonight before our child sees it. Now that we have, I have every intention of him watching it next time.
For the $10.00 I spent for this, it was a definite good buy for a great addition to my growing collection of worthy Christmas DVDs.
Movie Review: Real Life Values Summary: 5 Stars
The Christmas Shoes comapares and contrasts the lifestyles and values of two familes-the one higher society and the other blue-collar middle class. The rich have an impetuous desire to become richer and increasingly affluet. The irony of such pursuit is that the values that are pursued become more elusive and lost to those who seek them. On the other hand, a life of contentment leaves more room for harmony and family fellowship and ultimately the enjoyment of life. When the middle class family is faced with the untimely death of the mother, there is togetherness and love as a product of a together lifestyle. The young son is willing to do everything he can to please his dying mother and, with hard-earned money, sacrificially buys her dancing shoes she may need in heaven. The more affluent family, on the other hand, lacks family cohesiveness since the bread-winner is a workaholic which brings conflict and frustration. The Christmas Shoes brings out the need to slow down and enjoy life in the process, since life is not a future goal but a present reality. Relationsghips are more important than material goods. Even money cannot be a substitute for enjoying a short and fleeting life.
Very well done.
Movie Review: Christmas Shoes has us realize what is IMPORTANT in life... Summary: 5 Stars
If the beautiful song brings you to tears when you listen to the words, the movie will trump it over and over again. The meaning behind this movie is actually happening in our lives or to someone we know. To watch hardcore Rob Lowe go from workaholic and non-devoted husband & father to finally have a wake up call on Christmas Eve is in itself worth watching. But then to see happiness in a home because of the love it shared and not MONEY, to only be torn apart by death...it tugs at our heart.
The 4 things I came away feeling from this movie were: money & material items do not buy love, spend as much time with your loved ones as possible..they will not always be here, look around and you will find someone who has it worse then you do, and you CAN make a difference in someones life..even if it is only a listening ear, a few dollars or volunteering a little time.
I've watched this movie 7 times as well as my husband and kids have. Many times I walk in the den and one of my kids is watching it, they have all asked for their own DVD and book to have for their own collection. That speaks volume in itself.
