Movie Reviews of The Cat From Outer Space

Movie Review: Comic sf
Summary: 5 Stars

Filmed soon after the end of the Vietnam War and before the rise of Gorby and glasnost, when the Cold War was still chill, this is the story of the misunderstandings and manueverings that follow upon the landing of a small spacecraft on Earth. The pilot, christened "Jake" by the first human he contacts, is a member of a sapient race of felines who, instead of evolving "an upright position, hands, tools, and chronic pain in the lower back," learned to use their mental powers to manipulate their environment, then developed technology to amplify and direct those powers--in Jake's case, a crystal collar. His scoutcraft is in need of repair, or he'll be stranded on Earth for life when his mothership goes home. Allying himself with an unorthodox young scientist named Frank (Ken Berry), he sets out to acquire the element (gold) that's required to get his ship functional again. But his landing was witnessed, and the U.S. Army, specifically Gen. Stilton (Harry Morgan), is convinced that he's the spearhead for a planned invasion ("some slimy, green-headed, 12-legged monster may be creeping into the White House even as we speak"). Meanwhile Jake and Frank, along with one of Frank's colleagues, Link (McLean Stevenson), a compulsive gambler on just about anything, including every sport in existence, and his would-be girlfriend Liz (Sandy Duncan), are trying to gather the gold and get the ship repaired. What they don't know is that not only is the Army after them, but their employer has a rival who's planted an industrial spy (Roddy McDowall) in its midst--and both of them want to possess the secret of the power source that drives Jake's ship. This is a fast-moving and highly imaginative little film that should delight anyone who likes cats, humor, or science fiction.

Movie Review: My favorite of all the Disney classics!
Summary: 5 Stars

Zunar J5 Zoric 9/49 "Jake" makes an emergency landing and must fix his ship before joining his Mother Ship. Time is limited. With the help of a few humans, after shocking them a few times, he must find the material to fix his ship (I won't tell what it is and ruin it for you), get his ship back from the military (which has quarantined it for study), as well as fix the ship and get off Earth. The result is funny and lovable all at once.

***** I grew up watching this movie any time I could. When it was finally released on VHS I purchased my copy quickly. I also wore it out...TWICE. I have purchased, over the years, most of the Disney animated movies, but few of the un-animated classics. And I have never worn out a video tape before, much less twice. So DVD is a must for me.

My son is in his middle teen years. As a mom, I was delighted to share this movie with him as a child. Now, it is one of his fond memories of spending time with me and a bowl of popcorn. Just us and Jake.

This movie is clean fun. It is perfect for any age, from 4 to 104. Know someone who loves classic movies? About about a Disney fan? Or how about a cat person who treats their cat(s) like part of the family? Well, then this DVD would make a perfect gift for any occassion.

Highly recommended to one and all. *****

Movie Review: Abbysin-sational
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the first movie that I ever *remember* seeing. It stands out in my mind (and yes probably has clouded my viewing judgement for years) because it was the first film to ever feature the mode of moggy that has been my constant companion for over 25 years - The Abbysinian. An Abby was the perfect cat to play Zunar-J5/9-Doric-47 (or Jake for the non fanatics out there). Being three years old and the proud owner of one of the first Abbys in Australia - I remember for days after putting different collars on my very patient cat Tawney and begging him to talk to me. He obviously didn't, and it broke my little heart, but what he couldn't express verbally he more than made up for with his smooches and furry nudges. Ok the Film never won an Oscar, it was a Disney Kid flick, but as kid flicks go - it was all right. And lets face it - I can't be all bad, McLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan AND Roddy McDowell! '

The bit of triva the really freaked me out so many years later was learning that Ronnie Schell was the voice of Jake... I was also addicted to another kids thing he had done... Battle of the Planets.

Movie Review: all time favorite movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is beyond a doubt my all time favorite movie. Pity it is not available in europe so that many people will never be able to enjoy this brilliant family movie!

A beautiful abyssinian cat lands in a farmers back yard owing to some technical difficulties. he tags along with some army officers who have come to study his ship and determine the threat. Of course they believe a green blob might be on the loose!
When studying his propulsion unit (the artichoke) our astronaut picks the physicist he thinks best to help him fix his space ship. Jake (as the cat is named) soon is working with his chosen physicist his love interest her cat Lucy belle and his friend to outsmart the army and a group of criminals led by jellyfish who are after Jake's miraculous collar.

There is a lot of action and fun. I especially enjoy the small part by roddy mcdowall as the inside man of jellyfish in the physics department who is rather bad at his job owing to his clumsyness. The cats however steal the show for any cat lover!

Movie Review: Terrific Cat Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

A space traveler is stranded on Earth and needs to repair his ship. He befriends a scientist (Ken Berry). The space traveler looks like a cat and he talks by mental telepathy. He is named Jake by the scientist and together they try to get the parts to repair the ship, ending up in a pool hall and on a crazy bi-plane ride, among other things, being pursued all the while by army officers and a bumbling double agent.

This is a typical Walt Disney romp, complete with chases, crazy disasters, unbelievable situations, cute animals and romance. But the cat steals the show. A beautiful Abyssinian cat named Zak is the star of this movie. His supporting cast includes Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, Harry Morgan, MacLean Stevenson Roddy McDowall and a beautiful white Persian cat.

I would recommend it for kids, but I love it too. It has a special meaning for me because I had an Abyssinian cat, and it reminds me of him whenever I see this film. It's worth it just to see the cats!
