Movie Reviews of The CastleMovie Review: Subtle, Warm, Understated Australian Comedy Summary: 5 Stars
First, you should know that I am totally biased in favor of this movie. I have watched it at least 15 times; every time I need to laugh or remember how important a father can be in the dynamics of a family. If you have seen Muriel's Wedding, Muriel's father (judgemental, with very low opinions of his children) is exactly the opposite of Mr. Kerrigan and his family. This family is full of love and when their family home is threatened by "compulsory acquisition" for airport expansion they take their case to the supreme court of Australia with some unexpected help. Everytime I watch this movie, I see something else to make me laugh. If you liked The Dish, you will like this movie.
Movie Review: Classic Australian Story Summary: 5 Stars
It's no surprise that many Americans do not 'get' this film: it is made for and by Australians. It is not a parody on middle class families, it is simply a great story about the great Aussie Battler. This dvd version apparently is the US version, and will be changed from the original so I would not recommen buying it in this form, but the film itself is gold. European Australians relate to this kind of humour because it is a reflection of themselves. It's not British humour, and defiently not American 'let's make it obvious' humour; it's Australian humour, you can't get much better than that.
Movie Review: Great comedy with a big heart. Summary: 5 Stars
Saw this heart-warming film several years ago in an art theater and it's the only movie I've ever been to where the audience applauded. Have hunted for some time trying to find The Castle and was so happy to find it on Amazon. It is one of our favorite films. Shouldn't reveal too much of the story but it is basically about a man, his family and their neighbors who fight to keep their homes from being purchased by a large local airport, to build larger landing fields. It's a great story of family value, that your home is your castle ... it's a really great movie.
Movie Review: Fab Anti-Big GOVERNMENT Film Summary: 5 Stars
I can't really add much to the reviews of this wonderful film that appear below, except to say that many reviewers, both here and in the media generally, have been too quick to see it as a fight between the individual and big business. However, it is the Government that has ordered the compulsory acquisition of the Castle. The battle is thus between the residents and the Government. This makes the film all the more true and interesting in that it dares to take a satirical swipe at those who see the solution to all in governemnet interference.
Movie Review: Beaut Flick, this! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this film. Of course, I am biased as I lived in the city where the film was made, and am more of an insider to many of the jokes made. But I have held "Australia Parties" at my house for a while with many American friends, and they have been on the floor in stitches while watching this film.
Yes' it's a bit of a "feel good" movie, but the humour is fun and the characters are rather colorful. It features quite a few prominent Aussie actors and comedians. Coupled with a funny storyline, this movie entertains easily.
