Movie Reviews of The Castle

Movie Review: If you're a fan get the Aussie edition!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this movie and I can't really add anything else to the reviews already posted. But I will say if you love this movie get the Region 4 version from Australia. Yes you will need a region-free DVD player but it is well worth it. I found one for $35 that I can honestly say is one of the best pieces of electronic equipment I have ever owned. I can watch any movie I want without the powers that be telling me what I can and cannnot watch based on my geography. The previous poster is incorrect. There are scenes that have chopped. Part of one can be seen in the trailer. Nothing was taken out that will muddy the plot. But I have to ask Miramax, why, at a short 90 minutes, would you bother taking out more of the fun? And I truly have a dislike for the voiceovers done to change Aussie references to American. Don't underestimate the viewing audience Miramax! If we are going to watch this movie, most of us will look up any words or phrases we aren't familiar with. Thats part of the fun.

There are 2 versions of this film available in Oz. There's the standard version and The Pool Room Edition. It comes complete with a fuzzy slipcover to imitate a pool table, a lovely keep case with pictures of the cast, sheet music to "We're Goin' To Bonnydoon", and a top 10 list of the Kerrigans best deals from the trading post. Ahhhh, the serenity!

Movie Review: OMG was this funny! The uncut Aussie THE CASTLE
Summary: 5 Stars

The last film where I had so much fun was Lars and the Real Girl! Now, I laughed heartily and gleefully again at the Australian Indie film THE CASTLE (which if you catch it, is also on ON DEMAND right now...because the DVD is expensive!)

I sold Real Estate for nine years, so I was intimately acquainted with the dilemma facing Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton)and his family;his "castle",his "home",which is a ramshackled PUD tract house, built on a toxic waste site and sitting next to a booming airport with the pleasantly fresh smells of diesel fuel,is to be taken by "Imminent Domain",torn down, used to further the airstrip, and all this with meagre compensation from the Aussie Govt!" A MAN'S HOME IS HIS CASTLE!" protests the unbelieving Darryl. Well Darryl will not be deterred and his case simply must go to the Highest Court to be heard."It just isn't fair!"...now there's a legal argument. Follow Darryl and his cheery lobotomised brood through 90 minutes of sheer pandaemonium. This is as quirky and delightfully original as anything I have seen in recent memory. It is truly engaging and full of warmth and grand intention. The Aussies cherish this film and now so do I.Do what it takes to see this 1997 farce!

Movie Review: Brilliant
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually laughed so hard I stopped breathing. I watched it three times in a row, in as many days, and little in humor was lost. After spending 6 weeks in Australia, where I actually saw it, I think I may appreciate it more than most. Let me put it to you this way. If the idotic antics of Homer Simpson tear you up, then you will kick your self for not seeing this movie earlier. Because this is a family of Homer Simpsons. In fact they're so stupid, you might wonder how they got a house to begin with. Oh yeah, because it's practically under an Airport. And when the father stands there, and silently marvels at the high tension electric wires because, "they're a sign a progress." you get some idea as to the depths of retardation this family goes. But at the same time, I actually cared about the characters, which is so rare in contemporary story telling. Even the Narration is hilarious. I strongly approve of this movie. And for the people who didn't care for this movie... I dunno, move to Australia, and watch it again. And see if you don't find yourself silently pulling for them.

Movie Review: Down Under, Yet Above and Beyond Humor
Summary: 5 Stars

My family are huge fans of Aussie actor Michael Caton (STRANGE BEDFELLOWS) and pretty much everything from Australia. In this rather heartwarming and hilarious film, an eccentric patriarch (Caton) and his somewhat backwater family do battle with a town council that wants their neighborhood for the land.

This crazy clan refuses to sell...and though it is a total and Oscar-worthy comedy, I shuddered with delight when Caton chased the government rep off his land with a shotgun (which, as he does with everything, he explains what a great bargain it was and how much he might be able to get for it).

In the end, he befriends a man who turns out to be a retired Queen's Counsel--and is defended by him in a courtroom scene that would be more moving if it weren't so damned funny. If you are hunting for the genuine Australia, if you like slightly older quirky 1990s comedy, like foreign English-speaking movies, or like movies at all, you cannot miss this.

I'll bet it would make a kangaroo laugh its pocket right off.

Movie Review: A great Aussie film
Summary: 5 Stars

The castle is a great Australian film placed in the surrounding areas of an international airport in the city of Melbourne
(pronounced Mel-ben). The family are stereotypes of the typical aussie family with their accents and way of life. This film is not poking fun at the lower class aussie, instead it is showing everyone the meaning of family love in it's most simplest form. it is disapointing to read the very few reviews of this film who refer to the castle as not being the slightest bit funny. To those of you who do only laugh at Jim Carey gags, the subtley may be missed on you. This movie is hilarious, and those of you who have even a basic understanding of Australian comedy will appreciate this film even more. This is a great, touching, very funy movie that was produced on an extremely low budget and in less than a week. This explains what some reveiwers call bad picture quality. Although I think this aspect only add's to what the movie is trying to get across to the rest of us anyway. A very nice film that you'll want to own.
