Movie Reviews of The Case for Faith

Movie Review: Intellectually and Spiritually Satisfying
Summary: 5 Stars

The Film:

Excellent. Although I've been struggling with questions beyond the scope of those explored in this film, everything presented is logical and deeply personal. I appreciate the transparency of Mr. Strobel and those interviewed in the film. The answers for me - were intellectually and spiritually satisfying. Narratively speaking, although Templeton's story made for solid and sobering bookends (his experience ignited the book and ultimately this film) - the interview 're-enactment' using an actor in make-up was an odd decision that didn't work for me. I do, however, appreciate his story as I'm in the same place: questions are growing like weeds. Not necessarily existential questions as addressed in 'Case for Faith'. Spiritually, the Bible makes beautiful sense. It's extremely complex and deep, yet paradoxically simple. My questions are primarily historical. I'm glad to see that Lee has written a book addressing these in his newest book The Case for the Real Jesus. I look forward reading it and eventually seeing it (presumably) upon its release.

Other Resources:

(If you watched this, it might be because you have questions like I do. Although I recognize our communication styles might differ, I can only recommend to you what has helped me. Truth is of utmost importance to me. I started off with a viewing of Sam Harris' DVD The God Who Wasn't There and a reading of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not A Christian. I encountered these at a time when I was intellectually thirsty and spiritually asleep. Where I hoped these would contain strong data-centered cases against the Bible, they were actually emotionally-charged philosophical complaints. I remember being really disappointed. If ever there was a time that my mind was open for a bulldozer to come rip out my foundation, that was it. Instead I got an angry wind that tickled my roof. Years later, after the death of my wife's grandfather - followed a week later by mine - the questions once again surfaced. (Death seems to do that. Which is almost a testimony in and of itself...) This time, I migrated to the internet where I watched a few debates and lectures online (including but not limited to James White of [...] and Ravi Zacharias of [...]. Convinced by those defending Christianity, I then ventured into the following:

The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism
Darwin's Dilemma (DVD)
- explores the cambrian fossil record
Lord Save Us From Your Followers (DVD)
-explores the Gospel in a social context

CS Lewis is another - but probably expected - recommendation of mine.
(I find myself drawn to atheists who converted. Speaking of - Frank Pastore's autobiography Shattered: Struck Down, But Not Destroyed, though a personal account - is also powerful)

Anyway, this is just what I've run across so far...Hopefully, this helps...

In Conclusion:

In the midst of wrestling with all my questions, I've begun to wonder if my insatiable appetite for the smallest detail to be reconciled is the product of the western culture in which I live... Have I sewn my soul to material comfort and now, am I fighting desperately to preserve it? Am I avoiding 'faith'? - even if the object of it is probably True? With no higher purpose other than the pursuit of pleasure (which exists in a vacuum), am I restless only to try to make sense of my restlessness? While at the same time, am I trying to deny it through the pursuit of 'science' (knowledge)? I always thought science was marvelous because I always understood its heart to be the pursuit of God. The more we know about that which exists, the more we know about God (and therefore ourselves). Science, in this regard, has been beautiful to me. But I've handed myself over to its pursuit as a slave. Full knowledge will never be obtained by anyone. Moreover, isn't science at it's basest - perception? And aren't there intelligent people on both sides of the fence (and standing on top of it)? For every PhD in the atheist camp, there's one in the Christian camp and another in the Buddhist camp. The conversation has always gone back and forth and it always will. At the end of the day, I think it comes down to what a 'Case for Faith' points out: Only those who come to terms with their utter dependence are those who will encounter the Independent...With this in view - standing blind, I'm compelled to fall to me knees before Yahweh. But I'm hesitant. I'm not sure if I'm standing over a trap door, a floor that will catch me or a bed of nails. And I find myself distracted by these thoughts. "What if this?" "What if that?" not realizing that these are the wrong questions. What I should be asking is, "With what wisdom can offer - with what knowledge has to give - as so much has been revealed - is He worthy?" Regardless of what destiny my knees will meet, The Case for Faith has given me a reason to fall....

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."
1 Corinthians 1:18
