Movie Reviews of The Car

Movie Review: An old favorite soon to re-emerge on to DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

This has always been one of my favorites from when I was growing up. For some reason, I've always had a ball whenever I've watched this film over the years, enough that I purchased one of the ERTL die-cast 1:18 replicas sitting on the bargain clearance shelf at Target some years ago. The replica still sits on my desk to this day, almost staring at me as it did at James Brolin in their first confrontation.

The summary of this particular gem of a film is particularly simple. To paraphrase a local TV listing from a recent airing some months ago, "A driverless car terrorizes a small town in its thirst for helpless victims".

Is it oscar-worthy cinema? Not at all as I've always felt this film is a wonderful example of what suspension of disbelief at the movies is all about. Is it worthy of a Mystery Science Theater 3000 follow-up movie or TV episode? Considering its overall cheesiness and dopey cast of characters, absolutely!

Seeing as this campy classic is making a re-emergence on to DVD, I hope that it's given a good treatment. Anchor Bay did a really nice job with their long out-of-print release (particularly with the 5.1 sound mix) so I hope this release gets similar treatment with both picture and sound.

In my opinion, this is one to get if you're a DVD collector. Purchase it and enjoy the fun as it's a fun glimpse at the '70's, not to mention it's one heck of an amusing ride (pun intended).

Movie Review: Can't go home again.
Summary: 5 Stars

Writing a review for The Car is like someone explaining the joy of watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show over and over again, either you get it or you don't. The joy is in remembering a time, place and feeling long gone.

For the uninitiated, "the virgins" if you will, the acting is both wooden and cartoonish, the special effects are silly and not bad, and the dialogue is both.....no its just funny.

The Car was coming out on DVD and no one I mentioned it to seemed to care. Their lack of enthusiasm was well placed. The movie was exactly how I remembered it when it ran late night on local WOR channel 9. Those nostalgic recollections were a blessing and a curse. It was like unearthing one of your favorite long lost Christmas toys. You remember how much joy it provided you, but also sadly realize the magic is gone.

We can only hope that Josh Brolin's recent success cause the powers that be to look into a fresh, big-budget remake of his father's cult classic. Then maybe we can all experience The Car all over again with fresh eyes, and this time take our friends along for the ride. But even then, the DVD will be out almost immediately, ruining the delayed gratification that was able to build up to the release of this new print.

This gem of a movie allowed me to visit my childhood, even if only briefly, and for that it earns my warmest, fondest, 5-star review. Let's do the time-warp again.!

Movie Review: Wish I'd had that horn back in high school...
Summary: 5 Stars

For years my friends would tell me that i need to see this car as they know im a big Lincoln fan. So after years of coming up empty ordering it from video outlets, I finally came to amazon and found it.
Though i was only one year old when this came out, I always heard jokes about this car and know I finally get all the jokes about the big bumper, the "scary" horn and the scour-type front end.

This is a B movie classic. Everyone gets killed in a kinda humorous way, the effects are believable, and you can see the actors as they were up n coming, or atleast trying to stay afloat... Ronny Cox- from drunk deputy, to captain from Beverly Hills cop.. Quite the leap! Only thing i didnt like was the ending. It didnt answer ONE of the many questions we all had, when the credits start to roll. And when the credits roll, another CAR is on the prowl? Maybe he'll mow down from jay walkers in California..

When James Brolin corners the car with his cop bike and a pistol- does he favor Christian Bale?!

Movie Review: The car cruising sheriff
Summary: 5 Stars

I laughed at another reviewer's observation that the car seemed to have a "crush" on James Brolin, because that is just how I perceived it while watching. Even the moment when they were both out in the middle of nowhere face to face with Brolin pointing his gun, I had this feeling the car was "cruising." Even before the car did so, I thought, just wait, it's going to open it's door. And it did.
Even when the car finally has James Brolin captured in a locked garage, and spews emissions, its almost like a self possessed way of showing capture and domination rather than blatant cruelty of killing by running over him like all the other victims.
I dunno, I kept thinking the car thought that James was just plain devilshly handsome, and even made the successful attempt to do in his girlfriend by rampaging through her house. Maybe that was the whole point of the movie, the car actually did find Mr. Brolin exceptionally beguiling. After all, hell have no fury like that of a woman scorned.

Movie Review: Beware! Satan's at the wheel!
Summary: 5 Stars

Easily one of the goofiest films of 70's horror, The Car manages to combine three streams -- 70's Satanism, 70's car films, and 70's "Gaia's Vengeance" into one incredibly entertaining thrill-ride. It shouldn't work, even on a B-movie level, but it does somehow.

There are a multitude of memorable scenes in this one, but the very best to me are the climax, wherein we see The Car unleash its demon face when it gets blown to bits in a fiery cataclysm, and the one after it when everyone is relaxing... and the Car issues forth its terrifying Horn o' Evil before we see its wheels hitting the asphalt in a city. Really, the only way they could have topped it would be to have the very last shot be of the Car bearing down on a horde of little kids in the crossing walk... Mwu-ah-hah!

If you love cheesy horror you'll love The Car!
