Movie Reviews of The Car

Movie Review: What Just Happened?
Summary: 2 Stars

My friend had that "What just happened?" expression when the credits finally rolled. And roll, THE CAR doesn't. You'll probably gain 2 pounds watching as countless, lugubrious pauses in the dialogue invite commensurate trips to the kitchen, bar, and hooch drawer. Some reviewers have called this "the ultimate car hooror...better than CHRISTINE.' Others have characterized the car itself as "sleek." These reviewers are as deranged as the shrill actress playing Lauren(James Brolin's love interest). Nails on a chalkboard, she is, in a repeatedly wretched performance. Halfway through, Lauren (Kathleen Lloyd) and a gaggle of screaming kids enjoy the mythic protection of cemetery boundries as the car stops short at the gate. She taunts the car which is allergic to cemeteries and can't enter. The car revs and roars in anger, kicking up mountains of Utah dust then speeds off in a cloud. It would be camp fun except for her. There is no asphalt-ripping in this car flick. Just lots of revs, contortions, and that horn. Sort of a one-note truck horn from hell. Definately unusual and one of the only redeeming qualities in the film. Multiple blows of the horn are a sure sign someone is about to be wasted. The car gets back at Lauren's taunts by crashing through her house a second after she phones Brolin to say she hears the motor outside. And then, the horn! It was blissful recompense to see her killed. We never learn why the town of Santa Ynez is targeted. Unlike most films in this genre, there is no ryhme or reason to the devastation. Perhaps that's why the car is billed as "pure evil." And why does a town without a stoplight have a bloated police force with dozens of cruisers? (Choice comment, thanks, Dan). They built four cars on 1971 Lincoln's painted with 20 coats of black pearl lacquer. What a waste--the car is covered with dust throughout the movie! I purchased THE CAR as a Christmas gift for my friend as we share a love of car stuff. We screened it late Christmas night, both never having seen it. Fortunately, I also gave him the collector edition of CHRISTINE--the penultimate car-slasher movie.
