Movie Reviews of The Cake EatersMovie Review: A Must for Independent Film Fans Summary: 5 Stars
I sought out this film after becoming a follower (middle-aged, non-Twihard) of Kristen Stewart after viewing "Adventureland", "The Yellow Handkerchief", and "Welcome to the Rileys" - all very interesting independent films in which she excels. Add this one to that list. What I discovered additionally from "The Cake Eaters" is what a labor of love that making an independent film can be. Screenwriter & co-star Jayce Bartok and director Mary Stuart Masterson have invested a lot of heart, if little budget, into this movie...and it shows. All of the characters are extremely real, flawed, & heroic (all at the same time) and struggling with Life, Health, Love, Sex, and Death...not to mention an occasional dose of Betrayal thrown in. You know, like US!
Miss Stewart's superb performance as 15-year-old Georgia is inspiring, heartwarming, and unsettling all at the same time. Her clear-headed no-nonsense approach to fulfilling her goal of physical intimacy in spite of her disabilities & short life expectancy is very different - with little or no self-pity - and with extended scenes that are sometimes painful to watch as she struggles physically, yet triumphs, over the daily challenges of her neuromuscular disease. Aaron Stanford as the quiet, loyal, but conflicted 20-something Beagle also draws the viewer in as the 'moral center' amidst Georgia's desire, her overprotective (but potential exploitative) photographer-mother (Talia Balsam), & her hip grandmother (Elizabeth Ashley). And on top of that, the story places him at the intersection of the two families' lives as he and his father (Bruce Dern) and brother (Bartok) struggle over betrayal, disappointment, and anger in the wake of his mother's death (Melissa Leo in flashbacks).
My only complaint is that the film was short - but the focus of these events all coming together over a few days in the life of all creates an natural urgency of resolution and redemption. There is a feel to the movie and a setting not unlike "The Station Agent", an excellent independent film about rural/small-town eccentric but realistic characters from a few years ago. Mr. Bartok and Ms. Masterson should be commended for making a tender little film that looks good, feels good, but doesn't outrageously shock or become maudlin in any way.
