Movie Reviews of The Cadfael CollectionMovie Review: Get this collection! Summary: 5 Stars
Originally brought to the United States by PBS, the BBC series is on par with Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Hercule Poirot (David Suchet). Whoever is selecting the actors for the main character has a penchant for selecting the right person for the right part. Derek Jacobi IS Brother Cadfael. Just the right blend of self-assertion, self-effacement (with difficulty), curiosity, and tenacity, Jacobi helps transport us to a time long ago when life was cheap and justice could be too blind and too swift.
Superlative technical direction. Well designed sets. Outstanding acting by Jacobi and his supporting cast. For period pieces and murder mysteries, a must for the afficionado of the genres. The only disturbance in the entire series is the change of actors playing Hugh Berringar, the sheriff. Other than that minor interruption in continuity, a most excellent series that is worthy of anyone's collection. These episodes can be watched and rewatched with increasing enjoyment over the years. Enjoy!
Movie Review: Mystery Lover Summary: 5 Stars
Both my husband and I enjoy our movies. Mostly old movies and mysteries. We also enjoyed some that were shows on TV. This is one that we just loved. It wasn't complicated but kept your attention. It takes place around the 12th century. It was enjoyable to watch Cadfael seek out the evidence to prove that a person who had been accused of a murder or wrong doing, was innocent. Cadfael frequently had to deal with the mind set of the people with old superstitions and outlandish reasoning. Unfortunately he also had to deal with two other Monks in their Abby who were always looking to discredit Cadfael and build up their own reputation. If you enjoy British mysteries, which I feel they make the "Best" mysteries, you'll love "Cadfael". I guess that's why Alfred Hitchcock was one of my favorites as well. I am so glad to see that Amazon is now selling the older movies and the movies and series from BBC. Thank you

Movie Review: 12th Century Who-Dunnit Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best crime series produced for television. Derek Jacobi is Cadfael, a 12th Century, peace loving, open minded, crime solving naturalist who is practically the antithesis of those around him. In a still nearly dark age, abounding with myths, mystery, superstition and disease, Cadfael brings a modern sensibility as well as an ability to look at things straight on.
The recreation of 12th Century England and Wales is visually opulent in both architecture and costuming evoking a world as frightening as it is beautiful.
Jacobi is never less than terrificly engaging and the entire series is highly watchable with a high re-watchbility factor.
Enjoy!
Movie Review: Haunting and ethereal Summary: 5 Stars
There is something haunting about the Gregorian chant. This forms a substantial part of the soundtrack for most episodes. The European Medieval/dark ages setting adds a wonderfully hypnotic and ethereal character to each episode. This should have been one of the most difficult series to create... somehow we do not associate that period of history with detective work. We associate that peiod with churches, knights, wars, monarchy etc. but not detective work. Yet, when one watches Cadfael, one feels that the story is credible. With absolutely no forensic arsenal of CSI, this monk is able to bring the perpetrator to justice. Excellent viewing.
Movie Review: Great series Summary: 5 Stars
There are two things I wish would and could happen with the Cafael series:
1) The other great Ellis Peters books were made into similar shows
2) This DVD set got a bluray upgrade
Sadly we will probably never see either. Perhaps one day a bluray set will be released, showcasing the marvelous sets and costumes used for the series. For now we will have to live with VHS to DVD transfer quality discs. Don't let this deter you from purchasing the set, if you are on the fence. This is an outstanding series and really takes you back in time to other century's way of life.
