Movie Reviews of The Butcher BoyMovie Review: Francie Brady, Saint Of The World! Summary: 5 Stars
Francie Brady (amazing debut by actor Eamonn Owens) is a charismatic, hyperactive, highly imaginative Catholic boy that is prone to visions of the Virgin Mary (Sinead O'Connor). Subjected to a life with a suicidal mother and an alcoholic father, Francie darts and prances about his life in small town Ireland laying to truth all that there is about the hypocrisy of the village and the Catholic Church. His imagination goes from fantasies about atomic bombs to cowboys and Indians. His manic behavior lands him a stint in a Catholic reformatory where he meets the pervert priest and rallies the boy's hilarious jinks. Pity his neighbor, the overtly self-righteous Mrs. Shaw, who becomes the target of his psychotic retributions and path to his own righteousness in the name of the Virgin Mary. This film is shocking, hilarious and horrific all at once. Frankie somehow becomes a saint by the end of the film, and it's the slyest, most ironic expose on the Irish Catholic church in years.
Movie Review: This little piggy laughed all the way home! Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this film so much I purchased 5 copies for other film geeks.
It tells the story of one Francie Brady, fierce defender of his family and bane of the dreaded "BOG MEN". Da is a booze soaked musician who once showed promise, while mum tries to keep the "IDEA" of a normal family going. Alas she also is a loony. So "Francie" is left to his own devices especially after being placed in a Catholic home for bad boys and his best (and only) friend betrays him on his release.
I know this sounds a bit grim...but...it is quite funny.
I highly recommend this film. starring Steven Rea and directed by Neil Jordan with Eamonn Owens as Francie.
Movie Review: The Butcher Boy Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the novel by Patrick McCabe, "Butcher Boy" is the blackest of black comedies, and unlike anything you've seen. Stephen Rea is effective as always playing Francie's drunken father, but it's Eamonn Owens's stunning portrayal of one very troubled kid that stays with you. (Owens was plucked out of 2,000 child actors to assume the role.) Though the film is undeniably bleak, Jordan's magic camera and storytelling gifts transcend this darkest of subjects, creating a strangely hypnotic work of unexpected wonder and rewards.
Movie Review: Young Eammon Owens should have garnered the Oscar for his Summary: 5 Stars
brilliant performance of the intelligent but brutal teenage boy that never really had a chance. His portrayal of Francie was nothing short of genius, reminds me of a young Mickey Rooney's portrayal of "Puck" in "A Midsummer's night dream" So exuberant, full of boundless energy and right on point. I can't say enough about young Eammon except I hope he keeps on acting and finding great works like this for his ever growing list of fans.
