Movie Reviews of The Buddy Holly StoryMovie Review: Buddy Holly dies with Ritchie Valens and Big Bopper in plane Summary: 4 Stars
This is the ture story of Buddy Holly (played by Gary Busey) who was on the same private plane with Ritchie Valens and Jiles Perry "J.P." Richardson "The Big Bopper" on the night of February 3, 1959. The plane crashed and all perished. Waylon Jennings would have been on the plane, but did not go with them at the last minute. Richardson was very ill and Jennings gave up his seat on a coin toss.
Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection)[1979], Never Cry Wolf [1983]) and Don Stroud (The Amityville Horror[1979], Licence To Kill [1989]) are also in the cast as Buddy Holly's band. The 1950's music is fantastic. The main song "Peggy Sue" will forever stay in your memory. You will catch yourself singing it from time to time. Gailard Sartain plays "J.P. Richardson "The Big Bopper". Gilbert Melgar plays "Ritchie Valens", who can be seen briefly comnig out a glass door to board the bus. This DVD contains Audio Commentary by Director Steve Rash & Gary Busey.
Movie Review: the day the music died Summary: 4 Stars
This movie is the other side of la Bomba: the other young rock and
roll star who died in a plane crash in the winter of 1959.
The songs done by Gary Busey are pretty good, but not right on.
The idea that Richie Valenz and Buddy Holly might have gone on to
be even better known and regraded as rock and roll stars has
made people call the end of this movie :"the day the music died".
I liked the movie and if Elvis had been on the plane instead of getting drafted, things might have been different.
In the 60's the hunger for rock and roll brought us
the Rolling Stones and the Beetles.
Movie Review: Watch & Enjoy! Summary: 4 Stars
This is one of my favorite movies about the early rock 'n roll era. Is it all factually accurate? Of course not. Is Gary Busey's live singing and playing comparable to Buddy Holly? Of course not. It is, however, the definitive roll of Busey's career and not to be missed. Also, it's a great peek into a bygone time for a generation too young to have experienced the groundbreaking Buddy Holly and his peers. Watch the movie and then buy a real Buddy Holly CD and enjoy them both.
Movie Review: Good Biopic Summary: 4 Stars
Preety decent movie based on the life of Buddy Holly, don't know how much is true, there might be some exaggerations, but hey no biography is 100% fact.......what is fact is he put out a lot of catchy hits in the span of 2 years, before he got killed in a private plane crash at 22 years old that also claimed the lives of pop stars Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson in February 1959......good biopic, not sappy and stands the test of time.
