Movie Reviews of The Buddy Holly StoryMovie Review: The Buddy Holly Story Summary: 5 Stars
I'll keep it brief. Gary Busey delivers, in this reviewers humble opinion, the performance of a lifetime .. dare I say the role he was destined to play. Meanwhile, historical inaccuracies aside (mainly the absence of Holly's co-producer Norman Petty for dramatic reasons) the story remains the focus, originality, and the songs of rock and roll's equivalent of Ellington or Armstrong. No matter how often I see this movie I'm moved by the humanity, the innocence, the simplicity of this great American fable ... but it's the songs, especially in the climactic medley, that elevate this picture above and beyond the standard biopic. mp
Movie Review: Fond memories..... Summary: 5 Stars
Having been a professional musician for 47 years, this film takes me back to a wonderfully innocent era. The opening scene had me in tears - my very first gigs were at the local skating rink sock hops. I really didn't think Busey would be able to pull this off, but it has got to be one of his finest performances - my other favorite being his portrayal of the road manager in "A Star Is Born". The best thing about this film is is that Busey is actually doing the playing and singing....no cheesy lip-sync...and does a damn fine job even if he doesn't sound that much like Buddy.
Movie Review: Great movie, great music! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a keeper! If you like good music, or good acting or just feeling good, this is the movie for you. Gary Busey plays Buddy Holly with style, and he sings and plays all by himself. All music in the movie is live, by the way. The rest of the cast is brilliant too.
This movie claims to be more or less the true story about Buddy's rise to fame, and terrible death, and from what I can see it's pretty accurate. The DVD quality isn't the best, but it's definitely on the top half of the scale. Remember, it's from 1978 and was a low budget flick. Get it while you can!
Movie Review: The Buddy Holly Story Summary: 5 Stars
Steve Rash's film takes liberties with some details of Holly's short life, but more than compensates in showcasing the courageous performance of a most unlikely actor for the lead: Gary Busey, known for tough guy roles rather than musicals. The husky, rugged actor somehow turns himself into the lanky, bespectacled Texas singer and, more impressive still, performs all the songs himself. This was a triumph of characterization for which Busey was Oscar-nominated. The movie also succeeds in profiling an exciting if tragic early chapter in rock music.
Movie Review: Worth picking up if you can find the original "flipper" DVD with BOTH "widescreen" and "fullscreen" versions Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite movies. Sadly, Sony/Columbia Tristar has taken the "flipper" DVD from 1999 off the shelves with both wide and full screen versions and replaced with a lackluster fullscreen only version instead(this one os from 2005). I was lucky enough to find an older one brand new for the same price as the fullscreen DVD. Gary Busey, Don Stroud and Charle Martin Smith were great in this music biopic, some of it is, however fictitious. But even with that, this is one of my faves. It rocks!
