Movie Review: A great rock-and-roll film

I grew up listening to Buddy Holly in his prime, and I played some of his records when I was a DJ on my local radio station on Saturday nights when I was in high school. He has always been an important icon of R&R in my mind. I don't know how I missed this movie when it came out, but I was totally enmeshed in building a career and wasn't paying much attention to movies.
So I caught up with this movie at a late date, in 2007, and I am blown away by the quality of the DVD, the acting, the representation of the early R&R scene. Gary Busey impresses me a lot with his acting and singing. As others have noted here, he recorded all the music "live" and that made a huge difference in the feel of the film.
The acting by Don Stroud, Charles Martin Smith and the lovely Maria Richwine are top-notch.
I particularly enjoyed the 'extra' on the DVD, the commentary telling the story behind the story time after time.

gary busey did a fantastic job of portraying buddy holly in this some what inaccurate biography of the lubbock texas rocker who died on february 3, 1959 along with the big bopper, richie valens and the pilot. joe b mauldin and jerry allison were replaced by two fictional characters named jesse and ray bob. regardless what names were used for the crickets, this was still a very well made movie. then again, a lot of biography movies contain much errors. just look at kurt russel's elvis biography, yet even through all the errors, it was kurt russell's portrayl of elvis and ronnie mcdowell's voice of elvis that made that one great as well. i was 15 years old at the time when i saw this movie, went to the movie theatre dressed like buddy with a strat slung around my back. for buddy holly fans, i recommend this movie very highly.Movie Review: shocked

Im a big fan of punk rock. my favorite band is the ramones. this band on the surface will draw few similarities to buddy holly. but to me they are so alike its ridiculous. simple amazing music that hits you for 2 to 3 minutes then moves on to the next one. buddy was a great song writer and performer. he was a rock pioneer and and ill always remember him for that.
now to my movie review.
shocked is what i titled my review and that shock comes from gary busey. damn he was good. this fella performed all these songs live and with some serious gusto. music aside he was simply amazing. i enjoyed this movie very very much and hes the reason why. the supporting cast was good and the story had perfect focus.
if your a buddy fan or just a fan of good music its a must have
Movie Review: A simple but well done biography

This is not a huge hollywood production with slick lighting and camera work but rather a small production that almost has the feel of a cross between a home movie and a TV movie (in a good way). What this movie does so well is celebrate life, and simply follows a character with passion and drive. It's inspiring to see someone follow their dreams relentlessly and that is what the filmmakers have tapped into here. We all know how Buddy Holly's life ends (so if you don't know don't read on), but the movie never even shows a shot of the plane because that is not what it's about. Top this movie off with Gary Busy's performance which is even more impressive when one learns he did all the singing in this film live (he did not lip sync any of it!).Movie Review: The Buddy Holly Story

Being a fan of Buddy Holly's music, when I saw this movie in a $5.00 bin at Wal-Mart, I could not pass it up! It has some of our favorite songs of Buddy's so we have really enjoyed the film. I understand that there are some inacuracies in the film, but the story line is fairly accurate. This was well done, well delivered and even kept our granchildren's interest. At ages 3, 5, 7, 9 & 11, we were impressed. Our own 14 year old daughter was equally entranced in the movie. It is in good taste, well done and well organized. It is surely worth the money to purchase. Be sure to have enough time when you sit down to watch it. You just might find yourself wanting to watch it a second time through!!!
