Movie Reviews of The Brothers Grimm

Movie Review: Great Movie! Can't wait for the DVD!
Summary: 5 Stars

Given how much movies have sucked in the last year or two, I've been pleasantly suprised this summer. I've seen a couple movies in the last month that I can't wait to get on DVD, and The Brothers Grimm is one of them.

The movie is sharp, witty, suspenseful, funny, well acted, and well scripted and a general good time. It also is classic Terry Gilliam, and reminds me more of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" then anything Gilliam has done in the last decade. It also manages to completely avoid any similarity to his worst flick, Time Bandits, a movie so painful to watch that it makes my short list of worst movies ever. You'll notice that the people who hated this movie all mentioned loving Time Bandits, so that tells you a little something about their taste.

I also have to praise the acting in this movie, Heath Ledger and Matt Damon completely surpassed my expectations of them. The last thing I saw Ledger in was "Knights Tale" which is fluffy teenage fair, so to see him in something where he is not just relying on good looks was a shocker, he actually can act. And Matt Damon was so into his character that I was able to forget that it was Matt Damon in bad sideburns. Kudos to both. The supporting cast was also great, special props to MacKenzie Crook, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite supporting guys and Peter Stormare and Jonathan Pryce gave the kind of quality performances I've come to expect from them.

All in all, a great fun flick.

Movie Review: Great comeback movie for Terry Gilliam!
Summary: 5 Stars

First off let me say that i am downright pissed off with some of the reviews. Just because this is not the watered down, sugar coated, junk of Diney does not mean this a bad movie. If you want to watch some stupid move like Americian Pie then by all means watch it. Just know all humans have their own views and thoughts on things. What you find offensive another person might find very good or visa-versa. Also, if you are going to watch this movie then be sure you research the subject material first.
Secondly, people are complaining that this movie is too dark and convuluted. If you ever read the ACTUAL Grimms fairy tales you will find they were dark and menacing. The tales were written to keep kids from doing stupid stuff. Most of the tales did not end on a Disney note. For example, one sister of Cinderella chopped her toes off while the other sister chopped her hells off. Also, you have to be familiar with Terry style of directing.
In addition, their was no gratuitus nudity. Yes you did see some cleavege but that was it. There was nothing overtly sexual at all. I thought that was a very wise decision on Terry part.
Finally, Terry used his skills as a director to weave in a lot of references to to the tales. I give Terry all the credit in the world for be able to pull this off.
In conclusion, if you read the tales and not rely on the sugar coated Disney junk then you will enjoy this movie! Also, have a adult there if you are letting your child watch this.

Movie Review: Delightful!
Summary: 5 Stars

I hadn't read any reviews of "The Brothers Grimm," since I trust Terry Gilliam more than any reviewer on earth, but I still had the impression that it wasn't getting good reviews, and the trailers seemed very generic, reminding me of such forgettable films as "Van Helsing." So I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it ranks up there with Gilliam's best work.

Gilliam is doing a number of things here. The basic plot is a fairly light hearted adventure story--the Brothers Grimm are basically con artists, lead by the rationalist elder brother, who stumble (or more accurately, are forced) into a real fairy tail with real magic and real monsters. There is plenty of humor, but a fair amount of it is fairly...er, grim, and like most of Gilliam's work the movie can veer at short notice from the humorous into the downright scary.

The characters are engaging, the effects are functional, and as always, the style is wonderful. In an amusing reversal of stereotype, the story is set in French occupied Germany, so we have the evil French overlords abusing the good German peasants. Along the way, we are treated to amusingly twisted references to a variety of fairy tales, as well as none-too-serious meditations on the relationship between rationality and fantasy.

As a double feature, it would pair well with "The Company of Wolves," "Snow White - a Tale of Terror," or Gilliam's own "Jabberwocky"

Movie Review: "The Brothers Grimm" is great!
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Brothers Grimm" is great! Matt Damon (Wilhelm Grimm) and Heath Ledger (Jacob Grimm) are great. Peter Stormare adds some comic relief as Cavaldi. Terry Gilliam's directing is excellent. The story & screenplay by Ehren Kruger (who recently wrote the screenplays for "The Ring Two" (2005) & "The Skeleton Key" (2005) is great. The music by Dario Marianelli is great. The cinematography by Newton Thomas Sigel (who also did the cinematography to "X2" (2003) is excellent. The film editing by Lesley Walker (who also film edited some of Gilliam's films, like "The Fisher King" (1991) & "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" (1998) is great. The production design by Guy Dyas (who also did the production design to "X2" (2003) and the upcoming "Superman Returns" (2006) is excellent. The art direction by Andy Thomson & Frank Walsh (who both also did the art direction, recently, to "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" (2005) is excellent. The set decoration by Guy Dyas & Judy Farr is excellent. The costume design by Gabriella Pescucci (who most recently did the costume design to "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" (2005) & "Van Helsing" (2004) & Carlo Poggioli (who also did the costume design with Pescucci to "Van Helsing" (2004) and also "Cold Mountain" (2003) is excellent. This is a dark, funny, and twisted satire on the fairy tales that inspired the Grimm brothers.

Movie Review: I enjoyed it; Great DVD extras
Summary: 5 Stars

Wilhelm & Jakob Grimm are famous for writing "fairy tales", which were grotesque and extremely "grim". How they became so popular to kids is only that kids' minds have a more resilient approach to horror. Here we have a big bad wolf and Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel and a sort of Rapunzel character, but in the hands of Terry Gilliam, it's all given a new approach. Will & Jake are con men trying to scratch out a living, in a German countryside that's infested with the French army. (Imagine that!) Without giving anything away, they save a village and children, purge a wicked queen, and make everyone happy. Everything in between is most amusing. Matt Damon & Heath Ledger are the attractive brothers, and Ledger shows a special flair for physical comedy. There's a happy ending, and it suggests that the brothers got the ideas for their stories from experience. Peter Stormare is especially delightful in his parody of the frightened Italian soldier. Special Effects were used (CGI) sparingly, but to good advantage. I enjoyed it a lot.
