Movie Reviews of The BroodMovie Review: Not for everyone, but it got to me. Summary: 5 Stars
Dude. Why do I do this to myself? I watch these movies at night, alone, in the dark, and I get scared to the point of pulling the sheets up over my eyes!
Modern viewers may look at this movie and see something old, cheesy, and dated. But I'm not one. I'm the type of person that is way more scared of the original Halloween or Friday the 13th than any new version. This film will get you, if, like me, you find 1970's and 80's horror movies the scariest kind: primitive special effects, creepy location shoots, costuming and makeup and casting that is so naturalistic it looks like real life, all shot on film stock that is getting old and grainy and decrepit.
I realize that some people have written reviews poking holes in the premise, plot, themes, and whatnot of this movie. Really, that stuff didn't bother me. There's enough suspense, atmosphere, unique settings and cinematography, plus the pure dread of little dwarf monsters, that I just didn't have time to be bothered by the flaws that these other reviewers cite. I was too busy pulling the sheets up to cover my eyes. Classic and truly disturbing.
(I think one of the most disturbing things about this movie is the presence of the child in the film. You can't help but constantly consider the fact that the nightmare this kid is living through is a recipe for being seriously messed up--institutionalization-style messed up. Of course that's a main point of the film, but to actually see it play out is incredibly affecting.)
Movie Review: why is cronenberg alone in this world? Summary: 5 Stars
usually a maverick film maker does a few features and then right along side comes five or six imitations. not so with mr cronenberg. he has a monopoly on science-fusion-fear of tech and the mythos of psychosis. he has the enormous brain to take a very simple thing and elongate it to posit all of its potential without seeming either preachy or overdrawn. he shows stories that scare and disgust and at the end leave that burning hole like we entered a world, got our heads chopped up a bit, and somehow escaped through a generous and maybe too convenient wormhole. for this viewer, the brood was the first (of his chronologically) to set that standard. it takes place in a world of EST-like proportionality and Gerstalt-ian tactics that probably existed in another plane of our reality and somehow fell just short of our noses, where the shrinker, played with usual strong-arming by oliver reed, is holding his very special patient (samantha eggars) away from her husband and daughter, though not really against her will. don't want to spoil anything (aside: hey, don't reviews always go too far with detail and tempt you to lie and say you have seen a pic just to amass a gigantic amount of viewed pieces without the effort. no bones here, boy) else for the unfamiliar, except to say that sometimes our anger and raw emotions have to go somewhere when they exit our bodies. where, you might ask? mr. cronenberg will show you and then the way out. but you have to sit and baste here awhile first.
Movie Review: Rage Made Manifest... Summary: 5 Stars
David Cronenberg is one of the most under-rated horror directors of all time. This is one of his forgotten movies. People remember The Fly, Scanners, etc. But THE BROOD gets lost in the terror-shuffle. This is a scary movie! Written and directed by Cronenberg, THE BROOD is a tale of disturbing psychological forces unleashed. Dr. Raglan (Oliver Reed) is using his faddish "psychoplasmics" techniques to "help" a compound full of nuerotics. Among them is Nola (Samantha Eggar), the estranged wife of the skeptical Frank (Art Hindle). When their daughter Candice returns from a visit with mom, Frank finds her back covered in bruises, bite-marks,and scratches. Infuriated by this, he seeks to keep Candice away from Nola and Dr. Raglan. Meanwhile, Raglan's methods of role-playing are bearing strange fruit, as Nola releases her rage toward her mother and father who abused / neglected her as a child. Her rage is somehow made tangible in the form of a "brood" of murderous, mutant children! This results in the bludgeoning deaths of both her mom and pop. Frank and the police are baffled when one of the creatures is autopsied and found to be lacking a navel. The dread mounts when Candice is snatched from her school classroom, leaving her teacher dead on the floor. Where is Candice? What will Frank do to get her back? What is the dark secret of THE BROOD? Highly recommended...
Movie Review: Twisted Cronenberg Summary: 5 Stars
After hearing so much about this film, I decided to pick it up. After all, being somewhat of a Cronenberg fan, I should have already seen it. Cronenberg always seems to push the enevelope just one step further, and succeeds on many levels. This film is no exception. Its dark, depressing and downright grotesque. There is a lot of style and originality, however twisted and far fetched the premise is, it has a fair degree of suspense, keeping you grounded. This is not as gory as it could have been, however there is enough of a plot to keep this moving with interest. There are a few shocker scenes to say the least and that being the climax of the movie. Several times I found myself in awe of what I had just witnessed, yet always done with the intentional subtle sense of insanity. How can one not be in awe at the sight of a woman ripping out a bloody fetus and licking it? Or a teacher beaten in front of her very young students, as they look on with horror! Cronenberg seems to always put on a nice touch to some strange tales for the time period, and surely a lot of controversy. The acting is decent enough to keep you moving through the slow story line, yet rewards you time and time again, even if the special effects are a bit off kilter. This is a highly effective film that stands the test of time. One of Cronenberg's best efforts.
Movie Review: This movie is one of the weirdest/disturbing movies I have ever seen Summary: 5 Stars
When I first came across The Brood. I had no expectations whatsoever. I was initially very confused, but somehow strangely captivated. The movie from the beginning with its eerie score and strange dialogue begins like a roller coaster. You are sucked into this weird universe that seems so bizarre. After watching this, I realized that this film is Cronenberg's unique way of using science fiction concept to illustrate the horror of our own rage. Interestingly enough he also wrote this film around the time he was having issues with his ex-wife about custody of his daughter (go figure, HA!). I was waiting for a film to really shock me psychologically while producing a visceral reaction. I believe that the Brood succeeds particularly well with this.It was extremely creative and well executed. All too often Hollywood relies on using cheap kills and machetes to "scare" people, which is silly. (I mean really do we need to see a remake of friday the 13th. How much can you add to that pile of crap?) I only wished that Hollywood used a more psychological approach to horror, because it would make a far more gratifying experience.
