Movie Reviews of The Broken Hearts ClubMovie Review: Great Ensemble Cast Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw this movie as a recommendation for me, I read the reviews. Most of the ones I read were not complimentary. In fact, one of them gave it only 2 stars! I give this movie stars because of the acting, the story and the soundtrack. I used to be a fan of The Carpenters many years ago but as I got older, I changed my mind. Two of their songs are featured in this movie are strategically placed and made me fall in love with the music again. Each "category" of gay life is portrayed here in an honest light with no apologies offered or given. An interesting question happens at the beginning of the film, "What does Jack see in the Purple guy?" This question eventually gets answered and it is so obvious. So what did I particilarly like about this movie? See it and the question will get answered. This movie is a non-threatening movie which can be seen with straight friends, family and co-workers and you or they will not be offended. There aren't any token sex scenes or obligatory nude scenes. Everything is tastefully done. Please see this movie, you will be able to identify with at least one of the characters. A great ensemble cast.
Movie Review: Just Fun Summary: 5 Stars
At last a gay movie which delights in it's silliness and still is very touching without hitting the big "topics" that make up most gay cinema. It's also nice to have a film where there is really no sex. Where the characters aren't all [sex]... and drug addicts. That shows a wide-range of types and ages not just tight-clothed 20 somethings. I live in West Hollywood so this played at the theatre for quite awhile and I actually saw it twice there. Much more fun with a group, but then again, now i can watch it as often as I want. The character's dialogue is sometimes stilted and sometimes very sitcom'like, but the style is set-up very early that this is not reality. And it is really genuinely funny. Unfortunately the drama near the end comes off a bit predictably and from "left field", but it doesn't ruin the whole overly much. The cast is incredible and it's nice to see almost all of them working steadily out there in other projects. In the whole range of cinema this is not worth 5 stars but I give it that here since I can think of few gay movies that take my mind away as much.
Movie Review: A favorite of mine Summary: 5 Stars
The Broken Hearts Club is one of my favorite movies of all time... it's got comedy, romance, drama... everything you need in a movie. The acting is wonderful all around, which surprised me.Timothy Olyphant is absolutely great as Dennis, and I was glad to see him in a role that isn't a villain (Scream 2, El Diablo). I'm looking forward to seeing him more. Dean Cain proved that not only does he have the good looks, but he has the talent to back it up. In fact, the best scene in the entire film takes place between Cain and Kerr Smith. Matt McGrath and Zach Braff both have decent roles, and they play them well. But the real show-stealer here is Billy Porter as Taylor, the drama queen. He provides a lot of the comic relief, and has some of the funniest lines in the movie ("I don't see why they don't just let me hit off the tee... shut up bit**es!"... among many others). The Broken Hearts Club has everything I like in a movie: comedy, great-acting, believable dialogue. Whether you're straight or gay, The Broken Hearts Club is one you'll enjoy.
Movie Review: The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy (2000) by Greg Berlanti Summary: 5 Stars
I was surprised from the good quality of this movie considering it was made 10 years ago when maybe the gay-themed movies were still rare. All the actors are really good, the setting sophisticated and realistic (even if I don't see how a waiter wanna-be photographer and a waiter wanna-be actor can afford that two stories home ;-)), basically everything was refined and high quality.
Having different characters, it was also possible to see different ways to approach the being young and gay life adventure, and more or less they were all good, but from a movie which has in the title "A Romantic Comedy", maybe some happily ever after more would have been good, even if, maybe, you can consider it an happily for now and ever after later.
In any case, it's probably due to the fact that all the characters are in their mid-late twenty, and so maybe the assumption is that they have still time for the long-term relationship thing, and the proof that real love is possible is in Jack and his I will love you till death experience.
Movie Review: A FEEL GOOD MOVIE Summary: 5 Stars
Saw the movie and loved it, only a complete cynic wouldn't. Much more substantial than a movie of the week as some would have you believe. It's a romantic comedy and is as funny and moving as one would and should expect it to be. If you're tired of the heavy, depressing and gay themed movies - here's one that you will simply enjoy - a docudrama it doesn't pretend to be. The characters are all wonderful and at their present stage of life, their concerns, desires, hopes, fears etc. are true to who they are. In your lifetime you will have known atleast one if not all of these characters. For a comunity longing to see itself on the big screen, this may be a very small representation, but nonetheless a valid one. Does it provoke deep thoughts, well...no. Will you like it? Yes. If nothing else, by the end of the movie you'll be thinking as I did "thank God for my friends..." - it's message and true worth. Enjoy.
