Movie Reviews of The Bride Came C.O.D.Movie Review: Great old time movie from Amazon site Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very enjoyable and laughable movie starring two great actors. Cagney and Davis. The entire family can enjoy it.
Movie Review: THAT'S HOW ESKIMOS KISS Summary: 4 Stars
"That's how Eskimo's kiss" Well, that has to be one of my all time favorite funny lines. Not so funny you say? Well, you have to see what James Cagney does to Bette Davis before he says that line to get the joke. In Fact you have to see the whole film to find out why this overlooked comic gem from Warner Brothers is so delightful.
Sure the story of the wacky runaway heiress and the down to earth guy who tames her is a staple of screwball comedy, but with the unlikely casting of Bette Davis in the lead and the brilliant idea to team her against an equal powerhouse as James Cagney it what makes this a memorable fling.
Davis uses her brittle persona and trademark gestures in a new fresh way when confronted with a comedy as broad as this and it works brilliantly. She looks glamorous and is photographed beautifully. Davis not a cookie cutter Hollywood glamour girl is none the less more memorable than most because she has those eyes and she knows how to use them to make us believe in this film she is indeed the most glamorous heiress of them all.
Cagney brings all his gruff tough Irish wit and charm to make his performance in this film as memorable as any comic turn by Clark Gable or Jimmy Stewart. He matches Davis barb for banter and not only wins her in the end but us as well.
It really is a shame that Bette Davis didn't do more comedies in her early years but thanks to Warner's we at least have this to treasure. "The Bride Came C.O.D." is not a great film but thanks to the talent and energy of its stars it is well worth paying cash on delivery for the experience and joy of seeing them in sidesplitting comic action.
Movie Review: Not The Normal Cagney, Davis Fare! Summary: 4 Stars
This was fairly entertaining film with so-so comedy, good enough for one viewing with the two big-name actors in the lead: James Cagney and Bette Davis. I doubt if it's a film either Cagney or Davis would brag about having on their resumes. Still, it's a film classic buffs should check out. I mean, how often to these mega-stars share the screen......and in a comedy, no less!!!
Cagney and Davis did play off each other pretty well with some good dialog, to be fair. I also enjoyed Harry Davenport as the ghost town hotel owner. He didn't get a big enough billing for the role he played. Eugene Pallete, Jack Carson, George Tobias and Stuart Erwin also contributed and all were fine except Carson, who was just plain stupid.
It's corny and quite dated but there is a certain charm to it, and it looks look on this DVD.
Movie Review: Two unlikely suspects in a screwball comedy Summary: 4 Stars
Although Cagney played a variety of roles, he is mostly associated with gangster parts. Bette Davis on the other hand rarely was linked with light comedy. This film clearly shows that this was a shame as she is charming as a spoilt socialite and both players play off each other with excellent timing.
Movie Review: Underrated Summary: 4 Stars
This screwball comedy is highly underrated. It is a very unique little classic. The dialog is very witty and Cagney is great. It would have been interesting to see Hepburn, Stanwick or Ros Russell in the lead, but Bette Davis does very nicely or should I say she holds up her end well!
