Movie Reviews of The Brave One [Blu-ray]Movie Review: "The Great One" Summary: 5 Stars
First off all, DO NOT believe what most of the critics are saying. It almost made me pass on "The Brave One." What a horrendous mistake that would have been. I mean--guys--did we see the same film???
This is not your typical vigilante thriller-- It's much, much more. Jodie
Foster is(again)phenomenal. I believe she and Meryl Streep are the two greatest American actresses ever. Foster is blisteringly tough, heartbreaking, vulnerable, and guilt ridden, all rolled up into one. Her performance should win her another Academy Award come Oscar time. There is one scene in particular that comes to mind. She and Terrence Howard(also very good) are having lunch. His character(police detective) reveals the investigation of the vigilante may be coming to a close when one more piece of evidence is found. Ms. Foster's facial expression reveals guilt, sadness, rage, and fear all at the same time without her uttering a single word. Very few actresses can pull this off--but Ms. Foster seems to do it effortlessly. She had me at the point of tears several times during the film. BRAVO Ms. Foster.
Now for the critics who had all negative things to say about the film--especially the ending. If you are pro-capital punishment--you will LOVE the movie---especially the ending. Yeah, I know it is a little implausible--but who cares? I found myself tearing up at the end--it was quite cathartic--not only for the character--but also for the audience as well.
Justice IS served. SEE IT!
Movie Review: Dark, Entertaining Foster Revenge Film Summary: 5 Stars
The Brave One continues Jodie Foster's recent foray into the thriller genre. So far, she's produced some pretty good results. She shouldn't be embarassed by either Panic Room, Flightplan, or The Brave One. The writing, directing, and co-stars (Terrence Howard, Naveen Andrews, etc...) are all excellent and Foster is Foster.
Foster plays Erica Bain, an engaged NPR-type radio show host. One night, she and her fiance are walking in Central Park, and are viciously robbed and attacked. Her fiance is killed, and Erica is basically robbed of her happy existence by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Deciding that revenge is the only way for her to cope with her loss, she proceeds to buy a gun and go on the prowl for her attackers, while developing a friendship with a cop (played by Howard) working on the cases she creates with her vigilantism.
The Brave One shows how a traumatic event can leave psychological scars that are much worse than those of the physical variety. The movie is well-acted, and even if the ending seems unlikely, it seems fair given what has taken place.
The Brave One is a very enjoyable film about a not-so-enjoyable subject - severe trauma and its aftermath. It comes highly recommended.
Movie Review: The Brave One - You can never be the person you were Summary: 5 Stars
The Brave One was an excellent film which deserves a five star rating. Besides the very excellent action story featuring an abundance of action and violence, this story has a lot to say about never being able to return to who you were prior to being made the victim of a violent crime.
The story makes a convincing case for the idea that extreme trauma almost always prevents one from returning to that innocent "person", or possessing that tranquil state of mind he or she believed they were in prior to being a victim of violence. That person is dead and gone, always replaced by a new person having no "illusions" or ideals about safety, truth or justice.
The question is how to proceed from that point on. The idea that revenge and violence is inescapable is troubling, but I don't believe it to be necessarily true as Jodie Foster's character emphatically did. Nevertheless, this story was a chilling and exciting roller coaster of a film and I recommend it for all fans of action movies as well as wonderful Jodie Foster.
Movie Review: Magnificent Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is Magnificent. The plot is sheer genuis. Jodie Foster's performance is extremely touching and speaks to the heart. The story is much deeper than a revenge plot. It touches on human issues such as fear, loss, weakness and strength. The dialogue is cleverly written and is full of double meanings and deep symbolism. Jodie foster starts out as a happy woman with a wonderful job and a happy fullfiling relationship so many people long for but rarely find. Suddenly, her whole world crashes around her, and she must fight to stay alive and survive. In the end, after she completes her journey, she comes full circle becoming whole again, by confronting her fears and going back to the place where it all started. The detective sees her as a human being and not a mere case on paper, and feels her pain. This one of the best movies I have seen in a really long time. In a world where the quality of many movies is steadily detoriating, it is so rare to find a strong meaningful movie like this. It is a profound experience to watch such a masterpiece.
Movie Review: Jodie Foster at her best Summary: 5 Stars
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie was. Jodie Foster is as powerful an actress as ever in this modern day drama. After seeing what her character goes through, it is easy to understand her evolution. You end up cheering for her success because of the unbelievably terrible conditions of her city environment. It made me certain that I would not want to live in NYC! Also, you only wish the "good guys" were as successful in real life against the "bad guys" as in this movie. Forget the critics and see this movie for yourself. You will be glad you did.
