Movie Reviews of The Boys of St. VincentMovie Review: A disturbing film but an important statement about child abuse Summary: 5 Stars
I have viewed this film several times and it is never any easier to watch but I find myself somehow better for the experience. The acting and script are superb with standout performances by all. However parents will want to consider carefully if children are to view this film.. frankly I would not recomend it for the under 13 year old viewer.
Movie Review: Good melodrama, fine leading performance, handsome production Summary: 4 Stars
For all the care they put into this fine, textured story of a pedophilia scandal in a Catholic orphanage in 1970s Newfoundland, the filmmakers can't let go of the conventional dichotomy of child abuse dramas: grim, teeth-gnashing villains and righteous, just-folks heroes. It's as though the subject is so touchy it can only be approached through melodrama. Henry Czerny, though, gives a courageously unsympathetic performance that lends realistic but unexpected dimensions to teeth-gnashing, and Lise Roy is superb as his wife in the film's second part. And the Canadians go further than American filmmakers ever could or would, suggesting how available the boys' bodies are, and what could be attractive about them. Finally, the whole snowbound, wood-paneled production is goregous to look at. Subject matter aside, if you doubt that Canada is a distinct place from the United States, take in the sights, sounds, and attitudes of this small epic.
Movie Review: Love Foreign Films Summary: 4 Stars
This film "Boys Of St. Vincent", helped me emotionally in the same was as did the film "Abandoned". This film was just as good ... no better or worse. Also excellent in production, direction and photography. As a child growing up in a fearful and terryifying world, I can now watch more thoughtful decisions being made by children ... seeing this in their eyes. I have the desire to go back and time and correct my own mistakes, but of couse this is not possible. Once again, you must watch this film closely, without distractions. This is not friday night with the family. But in understanding things I did in the past, I am psychologically able to abandon my past fears, and start dealing with the present and getting along with my life.
Movie Review: A Sadistic cruel priest forces sex on young boys. Summary: 4 Stars
Most of the reviews here I agree with, but want to make a couple of notes. Again hollywood presents a sadistic cruel rapist of young boys, and causes the stigma experienced by boy-lovers everywhere to be perpetuated. Any man loving boys would never do the mean vicious things the priese does. As far as the child nudity scene, it is not frontal nudity, not unappropriate (the scene get's the message across) and it may generate feelings of desire within you which makes you uncomfortable. This is not a family film, should not be seen by children, and is heavy duty for most adults. Just try to not stereotype the behavior protrayed here.
