I'm a big fan of ESPN Films' '30 for 30' series. One of that series' triumphs has been the matching of directors and subject matter. To get the quality they wanted, 30 for 30's producers searched for polished filmmakers who understood the nuances of sports and the sporting life. One of the series' best efforts to date was ESPN Films 30 for 30: Winning Time: Reggie Miller Vs. The New York Knicks. That called my attention to the work of producer/director Dan Klores, a man clearly steeped in New York City basketball culture. In fact, one of the most entertaining parts of the production was the interspersed monologues of Klores himself recounting his memory of the games in his rich Brooklyn patois. With apologies to Jonathan Larson, you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take Brooklyn out of the boy.
Though a successful PR professional by career, Klores has also made a name for himself as a producer/director of top-notch documentaries, most notably Black Magic (NYC + basketball again) and the Independent Spirit Award-winning Crazy Love (an only-in-New York sort of tale). 'The Boys of 2nd Street Park' is Klores' first and most intensely personal project. At first you think, "Why do I care about the tales of these men and their reminiscences of their basketball-playing youth?" But Klores and co-director/co-producer Ron Berger build their story slowly. Stepping back and expanding ever-so-gently, we see come into focus the greater history of a generation coming of age in the 60s and 70s. It's brilliantly done. By the end, you really care about these guys.
I'll be sharing this recommendation with others. And I've already got my copy of 'Black Magic' in hand for my next Dan Klores viewing.
