Movie Reviews of The Boys From Brazil

Movie Review: Deliciously campy!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of the most unintentionally funny movies ever made. The usually stoic and serious Gregory Peck goes against type as the vicious Dr. Mengele and delivers his campiest and most amusing performance. You can literally see the delight on Peck's face as he deliberately overacts and hams it up to perfection. His finale scene with Laurence Oliver is a scene-stealer of the first order. When Olivier asks lamely, "Did you kill Wheelock?" Peck answers with ripping sarcasm, "No! He's in the kitchen, fixing us cocktails." You have to see it to believe it. The last twenty minutes of this film is exceptional.

James Mason is unfortunately wasted here in a small and needless role. Olivier delivers a puny and insipid performance (he was very ill throughout the filming) and the rest of the supporting cast are utterly forgettable. But it's worth seeing for Gregory Peck alone and this campy film belongs lock, stock and barrel to him. If you love films that take themselves too seriously, then "Boys from Brazil" should be near the top of your list. The rousing soundtrack is outstanding, listen particularly to the theme during the opening credits. Rousing indeed!

Movie Review: cheese factor aside, this is a very chilling idea that was sci-fi then but is all to real now
Summary: 4 Stars

first things first, gregory peck is grade a sugercured ham in this movie, but when playing a real life monster like josef mengele(the nazi doctor nicknamed "the angel of death")how much is over the top.how else would you play one of the most evil men to ever live.as his counter part and foe laurance olivier snaged yet another oscar nod as ezra liberman,a nazi hunter who seems to be forgotten by most of the world.
the plot starts as many ex and new members of the nazi movement meet in paraguay and are told that over the next 2 and a half years 94 men must die on or near target dates. intrested yet, well steve guttenberg(in a very good small role)is and calls liberman to tell what he has learned, but alais he doesn't get to finish the call.with liberman now involved the killers must fight to keep the deadline. liberman visits the homes of some of the murdered men and finds that the mens sons look very much alike. still intrested?
the movie even with the cheese is still a very effective thriller and the final truth of the plan is very real now, and could happen.still curious? check this one out and see,i don't think you'll laugh as hard after you see it!

Movie Review: Chilling prospect
Summary: 4 Stars

Watching a film about human cloning now makes it seems not as far fetched as when this film was made nearly 30 years ago. It was a prescient film, the only part of which is beyond credibility now was the number of clones successfully produced. Olivier and Peck give great performances as does the scary clone. I was surprised to find it had an 18 rating. Perhaps it is all that cigarette smoking that the young should not see? It is certainly a film to make one support the banning of human cloning.

Movie Review: fun with adolph and joseph
Summary: 4 Stars

great to see gregory peck having such a good time playing arch-menace joseph mengele. the plot is plausible, if somewhat naive and short in the hard science department, but i'd suspend my disbelief to watch sir laurence olivier play this nazi hunter anyday. the rest of the cast are a bit like card board cut-out villians and good guys, but the boy hittler is a kid only a she-wolf mother could love.

Movie Review: What Might Have Been
Summary: 4 Stars

This film gave Greg Peck a chance to act against type - he made a career of portraying "Good Guys" (Atticus Finch). I've leant it out to numerous younger people who never heard of it and it was very well received. My son has said that, in College, his buddies all enjoyed it.
