Movie Reviews of The BorderMovie Review: Ahead of its time Summary: 5 Stars
Interesting character study of a Border Patrol officer played by Nicholson who is disgusted and sickened by the corruption he finds in the Patrol at his new assignment in El Paso. And he refuses to go along with it. At the same time, the story is interwoven with that of a young refugee played by the very talented Elpidia Carillo who is trying to enter the U.S. to seek work. The greatest part of this film is to watch Nicholson reject not only the Border Patrol's corruption but the vapid Anglo life and culture that he falls into in El Paso in favor of the more humble but honest and vibrant Mexican way of life. One of the few times in the film that he smiles is when he does a good deed at the end of the movie for the Mexican woman. She is shown to be on a higher, more moral ground than the corrupt Border Patrol agents and, as in real life, that is so very often true.
Movie Review: Haunting and Unforgettable Summary: 5 Stars
This has long been one of my very favorite movies. It's certainly dark but with quiet moments of redemption. Jack Nicholson, Harvey Keitel, and Warren Oates are excellent. (One of Oates' final films. I still miss him.) Mike Gomez is often overlooked amongst that stellar group but is pitch perfect as the slimy villain. There's really no other word for it. He is awful and does it wonderfully! I think it's the title song that takes the film from very, very good to truly unforgettable. Listen to the lyrics. They haunt, as does this entire movie.
Movie Review: Great. Summary: 5 Stars
Nicholson works magic in this role. The way the movie shows how Americans pursue the American dream (Nicholson's wife spending more and more until it drives him crazy, to fulfill her materialistic fantasies) and those of trying to get across the border: that is their American dream. Along with the corruptibility of men who have no power to execute the duties of their job, it is well worth a look.
A subtle and intense film.
Movie Review: Where's the sound track? Summary: 5 Stars
Wonderful movie, with fine performances by a host of actors. What I'd like to know is why the sound track has never been released on CD? Seems like the LP was available for about 15 minutes, and I was lucky enough to get one of those, but hey, there is some real nice music all over this movie, and it needs to be on CD!
Movie Review: the border DVD Summary: 5 Stars
You almost cannot go wrong with Jack Nicholson or Harvey Keitel, the scenario is interesting, and Valerie Perrine proves once more why she never made the big time in Hollywood
