Movie Review: More than a movie about cocanie
Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great film but because it was made in the 1980s the drug of choice ,cocaine, is a major plot point.However it is also about the "America Dream" and how it all goes wrong.James Woods(Lenny) is the get ahead at any cost kind of person with a beautiful wife he thinks he doesn't deserve.He ends up pitching a phony partnership tax shelter to a bunch of rich guys trying to keep their money out of the IRS's hands.You will see alot of wrong in these people but if you take away the cocaine and look at the "salesman" you will find it very timely.This film reminds me of the way everything is sold today from God to goverment.Lenny could just as well be a "Market Amercia" salesman telling you how you can get rich today.

Suddenly, he and his wife (Young) have a beautiful home, fancy cars and a ready supply of cash. But when Lenny's fortunes suddenly change, he decides he needs a "boost" to regain his edge. What he gets instead is an all-consuming need that drags him and his wife into a cycle of shame,denial and anguish.You'll find an example of James Woods's most daring and outrageous (some would say outlandish) acting in this 1988 film by director Harold Becker from a Darryl Ponicsan script. Woods plays a fast-rising, sharp-talking salesman, a yuppie on the make with the good life firmly in his sights. Until he discovers cocaine--and then his entire live-beyond-your-means ethos blends with a ravaging addiction that drives his lifestyle strictly down-market.
