Movie Reviews of The Boondock Saints

Movie Review: Finally: Violent Good Guys
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me take a moment to explain the title: like most everyone else, I am a fan of violence. However, unlike most everyone else --- at least as I perceive --- I absolutely abhor violence against good guys and/or innocents. It is for that reason that I enjoy this movie so very much.

A lot of people complain about this movie either not taking a firm stand on vigilantism, or even worse, supporting it. Do not be deceived. These are likely the same people who will try to disguise their glee in the gruesome fatalities of ordinary people in a John Romero flick by talking about how deep and symbolic the mall setting was, or how it is a commentary on the human state. And you don't hear them whining when the eponymous Reservoir Dogs blow away some cops. But heaven forbid the good man should actually take arms against the evil man --- that's just wrong.

Well, I'm here to tell you that it ain't. And if you agree with me thus far, and your sick of the only movies with good guys being comic book conversions, and if you actually liked The Punisher, and if you always thought Pulp Fiction would have been better if Jules had just blown away Ringo and Yolanda --- I'm here to tell ya, you're gonna love this movie.

I'll spare you the gory details, for the essential premise of this movie is what matters most: ordinary brothers kill many evil men. It's awesome. That alone right there makes it awesome. But the fact that the plot is sweet, the production excellent, the dialogue entertaining and believable, and the character development good makes this flick a true winner.

Some of you may be familiar with Grossman's classification of humans into sheep, sheepdogs, and wolves. The sheep will abhor this movie --- they'll watch Hostel, and not see their own hypocrisy when they get a chubby watching a girl's eyeball get cut out. The wolves will be indifferent to this movie --- they'll watch Wolf Creek and worship its sadistic antagonist. But the sheepdogs will love this movie, and wonder when the sequel is coming out.

The only thing that could make this better would be accurate weapons handling and tactics. To anyone who believes it is a good thing when bad men die, you owe it to yourself to own this movie.

Movie Review: Heaven is the Boondock Saints
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're looking for a film with action, violence, swearing and comedy, you've come to the right place. "The Boondock Saints", (2000), stars Norman Reedus as Murphy McManus, Sean Patrick Flannery as his brother, Connor McManus, and Willem Dafoe as Agent Smecker, the detective on their trail. David Della Rocco plays himself and was given a co-role in the movie since he was friends with the director. Billy Connolly from TV's "Head of the Class" also makes an appearance in the film as ruthless killer, "Il Duce", who draws the line at killing women and children but will not think twice about killing another man.

Boondock Saints, Willem Dafoe, Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flannery"The Boondock Saints" is a film that rose very quickly to cult status, largely because the two main characters of the film are tired of bad guys getting away with murder, (sometimes literally), and decide to take the law into their own hands to "carry out God's work". Many people like to live vicariously through the two main characters, who are Irish brothers who live in Boston. Also, stealing the show is Willem Dafoe, who is excellent as the flamboyent, gay detective who sets out with the intention to "get these guys", and soon realizes to his own surprise that he is largely supportive of their actions. Smecker is excellent at explaining the crime scenes exactly how they happened and comedically mocks the inferior officers who are painted as less than intelligent. The film follows the two brothers as they track down some of the city's worst criminals and deal them their own form of vigilante justice. There's even a cameo in the film by adult film star Ron Jeremy, as the sidekick to a crime boss! If you're a fan of action films with gun fight scenes, then this is your movie. Soon, you too will be yelling, "THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!"

Talk of a sequel is in the works but if we could akin this film to previous cult movie sequels, this could very well end up being the "Shock Treatment" to "The Boondock Saints'" "Rocky Horror Picture Show".

Movie Review: The Boondock Saints
Summary: 5 Stars

Has anyone not seen this film in 2010? I doubt it, but it is worth a shot at writing a review of sorts. It's not really that serious of a film, even though one could theoretically call it a Catholic film (in some ways). Two free-spirited Irish brothers: Connor and Murphy MacManus living in Boston are forced to kill a couple of 'Russian' mobsters in self-defence after a bar fight gone wrong. These first slayings eventually lead the rather religious brothers to undertake a 'crusade' of sorts against all manners of evil men of various stripes. Fast on their trail is the rather strange and conflicted FBI-agent Smecker played excellently and quite humorously by Willem Dafoe. From this is spawned a rather entertaining and fast-paced film as the brothers allied with their tormented yet funny Italian mobster-friend go to war against the Mafia(s) and various other 'baddies'.

It is completely unbelievable, a bit corny at times, too thin a plot and I'm sad to say Reedus (known from the wonderful Masters of Horror - John Carpenter - Cigarette Burns) should seriously have worked some more on his Irish accent: YET STILL it is a wonderful and funny film I've seen quite a few times. My girlfriend rather intensely disliked the film, yet all my male friends love it, and that seems to be quite the normal situation when it comes to this particular film. It is intensely violent, yet not without a purpose. It is rather European: pretty much the entire crew of the film are of European descent, so that is of course an added bonus in this age of 'wondrous diversity': sigh. What more is there to say? If you are male and of good mental health and a stomach for relatively justified slayings, I think I can promise you'll love this film and its wonderful soundtrack with it. Five stars for this cult-classic of easy yet enthralling entertainment with a religious undertone.

Movie Review: Holy Action!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Boondock Saints (italicize), released in 1999, could possibly be described as a "cult flick," since it never saw intense gains at the box office during its theatrical release. However, it is a fantastic drama with both memorable characters and fantastic performances from some up-and-coming Hollywood names.

Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus star as devoutly Irish Catholic twin brothers, Connor and Murphy McManus, whose chance bar fight with Russian mobsters leads them to killing two peons in self-defense. After spending a night in jail and being released without charges, the two come to believe they are supernaturally appointed to enact God's justice on evil men. A virtual slaughter of vigilantism ensues, with the brothers and their new recruit, David Della Rocco, taking out all that is evil in South Boston. When the killings begin to hit closer and closer to home for infamous mafia don "Papa Joe" Yakavetta, he secures the release of an old family hit man, the mysterious "Il Duche."

Willem Dafoe gives a smashing performance as Paul Smecker , the anomalous FBI agent assigned to investigate the mob-related killings. His uncanny detective skills soon have him hot on the trail of the two brothers, and once Smecker realizes the particular brand of vigilantism the brothers are executing, he must make a choice to either take them down or enable their continuance.

With choppy dramatic sequencing including flashbacks and layered scene cutting, a few critics have compared the style of The Boondock Saints to that of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Some even write it off as a cheap imitation. However, the memorable characters, unique humor and religious twist of The Boondock Saints ensures that it holds its own place in the line of "shoot-`em-up" mobster movies. Don't miss out on the Saints phenomenon.

Movie Review: Boondock Saints
Summary: 5 Stars

The Boondock Saints is a movie made in 1999. If you like suspenseful, action movies this movie would be good for you. The story takes place in the city of Boston in Massachusetts. Two twin brothers, Connor and Murphy MacManus, played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus, set out to rid the city of evil. The brothers are vigilantes who feel it is there job to get justice for all the murderers, rapists, and mob families in Boston. As in every good vs. evil story the brothers are being chased by FBI agent Paul Smecker, played by actor Willem Defoe.
Since the brothers believed that they were on a mission from God, they believed they were not doing anything wrong. They were simply getting rid of all the other sinners in the world. Being Irish, however, the brothers are very religious and say a prayer over every man they kill to send them to their god. The prayer is heard in almost every scene in the movie. "Shepherds we shall be, for thee my Lord, for thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand that our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee, and teaming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patrie, Et Fili, Et Spiritu Sancti". The Latin at the end of the prayer simply translates to "In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit".
I personally thought this was a good movie because it really makes you think. In a way you agree with the brothers because they are finding justice for those who may never get justice any other way. On the other hand, you totally disagree with them because while they believe they are doing the right thing, they are killing people and committing the same sins they are fighting against. I would recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good thought provoking action movie. Be warned, there is a lot of profanity in this movie, but it helps to create the image.
