Movie Reviews of The Blues Brothers (Widescreen 25th Anniversary Edition)

Movie Review: JAMES BROWN'S PASSING THIS DAY WILL FINALLY MAKE ME BUY
Summary: 5 Stars

I have the VHS copy - But the sudden, shocking announcement of "Godfather" James Brown's passing this Christmas morning will finally make me purchase this special edition. His memorable performance as the funky preacher goes down as one of the greats in film. His performance adding to an amazing cast of characters truly makes this motion picture one of my all time favs. A childhood classic of mine that'll live on. RIP JAMES BROWN!!! Peace - JG

Movie Review: Irreverant with great tunes
Summary: 4 Stars

This cult classic will get your foot tapping and singing along with some of the best rhytm and blues you can encounter in one place. The police car pileups will leave Chicago never the same, nor will we. The Akroyd-Belushi will be difficult to match again. The music will keep you singing for hours after the movie ends. The irreverant humor will provide you with a plethora of one-liners to remember and give you a chuckle later on.

Movie Review: New Edition Garbage
Summary: 1 Stars

Thank you to the people out there specifically rating the edition. The "new" features really do suck. Let the movie companies know you're sick of this re-issue, new edition garbage, and everyone out there keep on giving bad reviews to these crappy "new" editions. Let the weasely bean counters in accounting know that their greedy grab for a profit margin will ultimately turn consumers off from buying their products period. It's certainly given me pause when it comes to buying a new DVD.

Movie Review: Danny & John's Biggest Hit
Summary: 5 Stars

I've only really seen parts of the film, but when I saw the film as a whole, I was hysterical during the movie. The cussing surprised me, but the way Belushi and Danny used it was incredibly hilarious. The music was the big hook for me. Danny & John are so talented that they could sing and act. It brings back the memories of the original SNL days, when SNL was actually funny.

I suggest this movie for fans of the late, but great John Belushi and fans of good ole' fashioned blues.

PARTY ON, DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Movie Review: "Who are you gonna call, Jake?"
Summary: 4 Stars

"The Blues Brothers" is a film that has grown on me with repeated viewings. Even the first time I saw it I was enthralled by the opening and closing sections of the movie, and nearly punched the air at the perfection of the ending, but the middle seemed to sag. I still feel that the middle two quarters of the film do not have enough plot to carry their length, but that scarcely seems to matter in the face of the affection I feel for this movie.

This is the only film in which John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd had the chance to play friends and allies. They don't interact at all in "1941"; in "Neighbors" they play antagonists; and "Ghostbusters" and "Spies Like Us" were made too late for John to be in them. Their real-life friendship does not come across as clearly as in some of their SNL work due to the long shots in which they were often filmed, the sunglasses which restrict the expressive effectiveness of their acting, and the emotional reserve of their tough-guy characters. But in the musical scenes that bond is readily apparent, and it becomes quite poignant to consider that one of these people will lose the other too soon, in both fiction (as revealed in the sequel, "Blues Brothers 2000") and reality.

"The Blues Brothers" has held up better to an extremely high number of DVD viewings than some of my other favorite comedies. I think the reason for this is the extremely dry, restrained comedic tone of the film. ("Car's got a lot of pickup.") Some comedies are like fluffy chocolates that melt quickly in the mouth. "The Blues Brothers" is like a slightly sour hard candy that lasts a long, long time.
