Movie Reviews of The Blue MaxMovie Review: This is the best movie I have ever seen. Summary: 5 Stars
If you're a fighter pilot or a "want to be" and if you like realism, nostalgia, war movies, and fighter pilot movies; you should love this movie. The flying scenes are good, more realistic then many of the special effects they use nowadays. They mostly used real planes. I would hardly call it a miscast; George Peppard played a very convincing fighter pilot. The characters are realistic. They all have flaws and a good and dark side like all real people. The people that say George Peppard was a miscast, must be judging him on his latter works, witch have gotten more hokie like most of Hollywood. Today's movies don't seem as good. Today's movies tend to have unrealistic characters, overpaid actors ect... the later part often makes them skimp on the script, additional actors ect... It seem much of Hollywood has gone to their heads lately and the movies have suffered for it. Some of the old movies seem better then the newer ones. The Blue Max is a true classic. I don't normally care for the drama part; but each time I see The Blue Max, I see more depth in the characters.
Movie Review: A flying epic: one of my 200 cult movies ever! Summary: 5 Stars
A humble but ambitious German official -Bruno Stechel- is eager to become as war ace against all the odds. He will have to face the well known sense of military aristocracy., specially when he deals with Willi the first rank pilot who has shot down more than twenty airplanes. But Bruno has something else in mind and will crown his expectations with an alluring Countess, wife of his chief in command (James Mason).
John Guillermin a talented British director depicted an admirable and honest portrait from the contrary side (The Germans) showing us their passions, envies, personal rivalries and intrigues behind stage.
George Peppard made (to my mind) his lifetime role as the unscrupulous and ruthless officer who will defy the boundaries of the forbidden. James Mason also stole the show as the implacable general who finds the golden occasion in order to undo him.
The memorable aerial sequences remark the internal dogfights between these lions of the air make this film a true landmark in the history of cinema.
Movie Review: The Blue Max Summary: 5 Stars
I was enticed to view this movie since I am a military veteran and a licensed pilot. The acting by George Peppard, James Mason and Ursula Andress is very compelling and captivating. The plot centers around a class struggle of a commoner (Peppard) against the officer corps and the aristocratic class of Germany and his zeal to prove that he is as good as they are by earning the coveted Blue Max. This medal is Germany's highest award for valor and is given after a pilot is credited with 20 confirmed kills. The air combat scenes are fairly accurate and the aircraft are correct for the models depicted, such as the British SE5 and the Fokker DRI. The ground war scenes are just as grisly and filthy as I can imagine that the trench warfare must have been. I would recommend this movie as a definite collectible to any war buff who enjoys air combat.
Movie Review: Now that was dogfighting!! Summary: 5 Stars
No fire and forget missiles or stinking radar needed. I first saw this movie when I was 9 years old and it was one of the forces that lead me to become an aerospace engineer. I watched it last night and I couldn't believe I actually finally owned the movie 29 years after first seeing it on TV.
I think Peppard did a great job of making his character quite believeable. The real drama in this movie is in its suble moments. As when the General told his wife to come along or they would be late for lunch while a plane created a smoking hole in the distance. Peppard's contrasting views on death on the battlefield/air and his commanding officer's view of chivalry was quite thought provoking.
And of course the air combat scenes are fabulous. No CGI but the real thing, by contrast Flyboys was a piece of garbage.
Movie Review: "When they kill me, I don't want anyone to salute." Summary: 5 Stars
I dont know what to say about this movie other than I've watched it about 30 times, and the DVD lives up to the memories of the theatrical release 40 years ago.In this DVD we have an outstanding 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer and the source material looks to have been in pretty good condition. The indoor scenes look very sharp, but the outdoor scenes suffer slightly from being mostly shot in overcast conditions but they are amazing and beatifully choreographed and don't diminish the quality of the aerial sequences. Overall, the color is well balanced and energetic. And the Dolby Digital 2.0 is 'adequate',,,, just crank up your stereo. Extras are limited to English, Spanish, and Portuguese trailers (Yes - Portuguese!), plus trailers for five other Fox War films. Yawwwn! 5 Kills
