Movie Reviews of The Black Shield of Falworth (Amazon.com Exclusive)Movie Review: Fine old-school swashbuckler Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fine, fine old 1950s film set in 15th Century England with a castle, knights, esquires, two earls (one good, one supremely wicked), a Prince of Wales who has to pretend to be drunk to stay alive, and a benign, if slightly bewildered and befuddled king. As I understand it, the movie was shot somewhere in southern California. The castle looks wonderful, although not terribly accurately depicted. Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh were huge stars when this movie was made, starring together in this picture as unlikely lovers just about the time their real off-screen romance was getting underway. Tony Curtis, with his Brooklyn accent, playing a medieval English knight is really funny, although unintentionally so; however Janet Leigh's performance as a medieval English noble lady is just about spot-on. David Farrar as the villainous Earl of St. Alban is delightful. His portrayal is that of a man who knows he's wicked and who revels in that fact. The score by Joseph Gershenson is simply outstanding. It reminds me of the film scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, mostly done at Warner Brothers in the 1930s, when he scored some of the most famous Errol Flynn swashbucklers. If you have kids, this is an absolutely safe movie to let even young children see. There are some violent scenes, but never a trace of blood or gore except near the very end, which even then doesn't look at all convincing. Those who are evil and wicked are clearly so, the "good guys" are equally clearly delineated, and the results are predictable. Personally, I watch this movie every so often just for the music, if for no other reason, and would highly recommend it to anyone for its pure entertainment value.
