Movie Review: Fresh!
Summary: 5 Stars
I have some dim memory of this movie when it came out... We either couldn't find it in the theater, or maybe my parents decided it was too scary... regardless, I eventually found and read the books, and even later, after HS graduation, got ahold of the movie. Ah, what a movie.
BC is very different from every other Disney animated feature in that the tone is at times, quite, quite dark. Resurrecting an army of evil dead is something common to mostly horror, although also a common theme in Teen Fantasy. The villian, The Horned King looks quite scary, and acts generally like the soul-less incarnation of evil. The action is non-stop, and generally quite well animated. While it does have cutesy moments- gurgi and henwen, it's generally not a cute movie. I think the sacrificing of teh cute near the end is what gave most viewers such a shock. Moreover, while the characters are generally struggling against evil, there's a certain moral ambiguity to them which I guess wasn't popular with general public. As a straight-ahead fantasy, this movie works quite well, and I'm really disappointed that it didn't do better. Features Dragonlike creatures, Horned King, wizardy mentor, skeletons, buried king, bard, and a trio of witches. Oh yeah, and cutesy fairies.
Heh, one of the Artists (Ploog) went on to work on Magic : The Gathering.
Also, this version is not the original. Several scenes were cut- mostly involving death, and little nudity on Eilonwy's part. I guess we might eventually see those scenes, but my guess is we probably won't. Sigh.
