Movie Reviews of The Bishop's Wife

Movie Review: What is important in life?
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great comedy with a message for everyone. Most of the main characters in this movie have a problem with focusing in what should be important to them. Bishop Henry Brougham (Niven) is more focused on building a cathedral as a monument to God than the purpose of the cathedral or any alternate use of money. Mrs. Hamilton (Gladys Cooper), who holds the purse strings, is thinking the cathedral is more of a monument to her late husband. Even an angel named Dudley (Grant), sent to help, gets sidetracked in the process by the bishop's wife, Julia (Young) who in turn may be distracted by a hat. The great acting of major stars will distract you. Watch this movie to find out how and if they are able to recognize their folly and what they can do about it?

Movie Review: Get it, Get it, Get it.
Summary: 5 Stars

Get it, Get it, Get it.

Now that we've gone past the subtleties, this is indeed one of the better feel good oldies and definitely one of the best Cary Grant shows.

Amazingly, even though made in 1948, it is still soooo.. relevant today. The issues raised and the sentiments felt are still so real and alive even today.

The best part is that for an old show it is amazingly accepting and non-preachy about a lot of things. There is also sufficient twists and turns in the plot to rise above the genre of innocent and simplistic films from the past.

Love it. It is still excellent and will definitely more than hold its own with the best shows of today.

Movie Review: Talk about brilliant casting
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has one of the most brilliant bits of casting ever. I mean, (from a woman's perspective) if an angel were to appear on earth, what better form could he possibly manifest than that of Cary Grant?
Originally, Grant was supposed to play the part of the Bishop, which is well-played by David Niven, and Niven was supposed to play Dudley the angel. Grant reportedly insisted on taking the angel's part, however. He plays it to perfection, right down to the soulful look in his liquid brown eyes.
This is one of the best classic holiday movies. It is not shown as much as "It's a Wonderful Life," and though it is warm and sentimental, it not too sticky-sweet to tolerate.

Movie Review: Best Christmas Story Ever!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my all time FAVORITE Christmas movie. It's heartwarming, witty, sweet and even has a great message. The characters are perfectly cast and the story is more than wonderful. If you like Christmas in Connecticut, Miracle on 34th St and/or It's a Wonderful Life, you will absolutely LOVE this film. I watch it a couple time each year!!! Even my husband (who is not a Christmas movie junkie) likes it. In addition, if you like this type of movie take a look at The Devil and Miss Jones. Not a Christmas movie, but it's so heartwarming and cute, you will love it. Also, be sure you get The Devil & MISS Jones, not the The Devil and MRS Jones - My version features Robert Cummings

Movie Review: EXCELLENT Christmas Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

The Preacher's Wife was a remake of this. In the Preacher's Wife, I kept rooting for the preacher to dump the controlling diva and go have some fun. The plot is pretty much the same, but it soooo missed the spirit of the original. In this one, you clearly want the couple to get back together, you can empathisize with all three characters, and you can see that it's really just a case of good intentions leading to overwork leading to marital problems. It's an incredibly sweet, nice movie that all ages can enjoy. And I'll take Cary Grant as my Guardian Angel, no questions asked!
