Movie Reviews of The Bishop's WifeMovie Review: My Grandmother loved it... Summary: 5 Stars
.... back in the 70s I watched it with her and she couldn`t get over it... Her husband was tragically killed in South-Africa in 1946 at the the age of 36 and was dying to bring her over from Norway after he had witnessed films in Radio City Music Hall...
As I saw it yesterday on DVD, the movie talked to me - indeed I think as it did to my grandma in the 70s... The day after she watched it, she continued to marvel at its greatness and how much she enjoyed Cary Grant. Cary Grant was born the same year - on that same date as her - and ever since then - Mr Grant has held a special place in my heart... Sentimental reasons I know... but the film is still as magical as it must have been at the time of its initial release.
I hail it as the all-time-xmas film:-) PS: Don`t miss the funny trailer hehehe
Movie Review: Lovely Film. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a lovely film set during Christmas time and centered around the troubles of a Bishop maintaining his work/life balance. Suffice it to say, the Bishop fails miserably at maintaining the balance and focuses far too much on fund raising for his glorious new chapel that he has in mind. In the meantime, his wife (aptly portrayed by Loretta Young) is increasingly unhappy and his young daughter rarely ever sees him. In an unexpected answer to a prayer, Cary Grant appears as an angel sent to help. And several lovely scenes ensue where he helps people. However, the Bishop starts to get jealous as Cary Grant "Dudley" spends so much time with his wife. Eventually, we are treated to a lovely Christmas Eve sermon scene and a lovely feeling of warmth and happiness towards the end.
Movie Review: Charming holiday classic Summary: 5 Stars
This film is on the shortlist of my favorite holiday films. From the boy-choir scene to the skating rink, I can watch it again and again. The casting is flawless. I especially love Elsa Lancester's performance, and the three leads work effortlessly together. I can't decide which performance I love the best. Niven, Grant and Young all seem to be at the top of their careers. Gotta love Cary Grant playing the harp, but then again there is Loretta Young buying her Christmas presents, and David Niven preaching his Christmas sermon. Being an Episcopal priest, I enjoy the church politics and particulars presented so carefully. Anyone who loves Christmas will probably love this film. If you don't, expect a visitation from a friendly angel. Just hope it's Cary Grant!
Movie Review: My all-time favorite film. Summary: 5 Stars
When I was a kid, I dreamed of being able to watch this delightful film any time I wanted, never figuring that dream would actually come true. When we bought our first VCR, this was one of the first videos I played in it and I wore the tape out. Now having the movie on DVD is an added treat. Cary Grant at his most debonair and persuasive, Loretta Young at her most gracious and unsure, David Niven at his most sincere and perplexed -- and Monty Woolley is a delight. The Mitchell BoyChoir's "O, Sing To God" made me hunt high and low for the hard-to-find soundtrack and the harder-to-find sheet music. The harp scene in Mrs. Hamilton's mansion, the ice skating in the park, all everyone's favorites. It's old-fashioned, it's out of step, and it's a treasure beyond words.
Movie Review: A CHRISTMAS DVD FOR ALL SEASONS Summary: 5 Stars
When you put too many top stars in the same film the results are sometimes disappointing. That is far from the case in this movie. Three of the best-ever actors combine to make this one a true classic. The interaction of this unusual triangle serves to involve the viewer more in the realities of life and living than in the movie's incidental supernatural events. This is my absolute favorite for Loretta Young and one of the best ever for both David Niven and Cary Grant. This is a "Must See" if there ever was one. It just makes you feel good each and every time you watch it. So either buy, beg or borrow this movie(DVD & VHS formats are about equal in quality) and my guess is that you will never regret it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY VEDA & jIM
