Movie Reviews of The Bishop's WifeMovie Review: A Christmas Classic Summary: 5 Stars
"The Bishop's Wife" is right up there with "It's a Wonderful Life," "A Christmas Carol (1938, 1954)" and "Christmas in Connecticut" as a must-see movie when the weather outside is frightful and the love af your family is so delightful.
Cary Grant is at his best in his role as the angel. David Niven must have taken a bite from a lemon before those scenes where had to be so sour. Loretta Young is so kind and beautiful in the title role.
The character actors, however, steal the show. Monty Wooley is wonderful as the Professor. The scene where the angel keeps filling his glass of wine ranks high in cinema history. Elsa Lanchester is superb as the maid, and how about James Gleason as Sylvester the cab driver.
I saw the movie on some new channel (THIS Network?) and they cut out the cab ride scene complete with the beautiful scene at the skating rink. I was mortified. Now, it is part of my collection, just waiting to be viewed on that cold night around Christmastime every year -- with James Gleason and his cab waiting to pick me up.
Movie Review: A Beautiful Little Film Summary: 5 Stars
What a pity it is that films such as this are virtually unthinkable in contemporary culture. Explicitly Christian but not preachy or sectarian, it offers a universal message as appropriate at Christmas as any other time. The galaxy of stars (Young, Grant, Niven) and excellent supporting cast are used to great advantage. Goldwyn had thought of Niven in what became the Grant role, but Grant wisely persuaded him to cast it in its present form. 'Heartwarming' is the word that most quickly comes to mind, something that is just as necessary today as it was in 1947. The Bishop's Wife is a romantic comedy without sex, a reflection on wealth and religion without anger or bitterness and a reflection on essential human good without soppy sentimentality. It is hopeful without being doctrinaire and sweet without being saccharine. We would not want a current array of films that only included works such as this, but it would be nice to have a few from time to time. If you have not seen it, do so. It will lift your spirits.
Movie Review: 10 star Classic with Classy stars and it's magical Summary: 5 Stars
This wonderful movie made in 1947 shows that things were alot the same then as they are now, with the Bishop played by David Niven being to busy and self consumed with success to realize what a treasure he had in his wife played by a favorite of mine, Loretta Young and their small daughter.
Then an angel played by Cary Grant comes along and is used to set things straight although he does get side tracked and falls for the bishops wife. The acting is wonderful and the ice skating scene is worth the DVD itself. Its a high class group of actors all of whom went on to win Oscars.
Personally I loved the way faith and wonder are blended so well in the movie from the Bishops wife admiring a certain hat that on a Bishops salary was an extravagant, but becomes hers. Or how the wealthy widow becomes a believer in building a nicer church without having to have the name of her family on it. Great lessons in humility and believing in God.
Movie Review: And Heaven Sent an Angel Summary: 5 Stars
This is a Christmas Classic with great actors: Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven. The story centers on a Bishop (David), his wife, Julia (Loretta), and an angel (Cary). The Bishop is praying for a Cathedral to be built with a rich lady's money and is consumed with getting it built. He pays little attention to his wife anymore. Although he loves her, she is kinda getting lost in the shuffle. Cary comes in as an answer to the Bishop's prayer and to try to set things back on the right path.
Definitely a classic, this story is set at Christmas time and defines the things that are really of value. It sends a message about appreciating what you have, the value in friendships, looking behind things for meaning, sensitivity to people's feelings, love, having fun, and the real meaning of christmas. There are wonderful performances by fantastic actors. This is a great movie to have and a great movie to give as a gift.
Movie Review: Oldie but Goodie Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I love this movie. We look forward to seeing it at least once a year during the Christmas season. Unfortunately, if we can find it shown on TV, it is interrupted by commercials, and sometimes complete scenes are cut out. This degrades the movie and makes is less enjoyable to watch. So recently I purchased the DVD through Amazon.com. The quality of the film is great. The only problem, which was minor, was that sometimes we had to turn up the volume to hear it better. Cary Grant is so charming as the Angel, and Loretta Young is so sweet, beautiful and naive, what Angel wouldn't fall in love with her! I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys reminiscing about the good old days and appreciates good character and goodwill toward men. It's an oldie but a goodie! I had difficulty finding this DVD at the stores, so I purchased it on Amazon.com and was glad I did. The price was right, and I received it quickly.
