Movie Reviews of The Big Country

Movie Review: MGM....Help!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Next to "The Magnificent Seven", this is my favorite western film. The actors, the story, the locations and most of all, the MUSIC. Why in the world MGM has such a poor quality DVD on the market. And in MONO. One of the best musical scores in mono? I was at a collectors show about 4 years ago and found a CD of the entire score, released only in Australia. Over 70 minutes of that great music. It was expensive, but I could not write the check fast enough. I keep a copy in my car all the time. I wish I knew who to write to at MGM about releasing the film and the music in a re-mastered form. And even, oh my gosh, Blue-ray. A film such as this, should be seen and heard in the best possible form. I love it and will keep watching and listening to what I have until something better arrives on the market. When it is, I'll buy it ASAP.

Movie Review: what does it mean to be a man?
Summary: 5 Stars

James McKay (Gregory Peck)arrives from the east to a land where a man's honour and reputation -that is, what the others think of him- matter more than his actions, and need to be constantly proved and deffended by the use of force. McKay, a world-wise sea captain, does not agree with this state of things. By refusing to be always proving -in this beastly way- that he is a "real" man, he loses his fiancée's love and his future father-in-law's respect for him. But it is the latter's -Major Henry Terrill- and his life long enemy's -Rufus Hannasey- determination to follow this code of honour to the limit what brings disaster on and shows that McKay was right: one is not more of a man for being stronger, but for being more human and taking the responsability of one's actions towards other people.

Movie Review: An All Time Classic -Non Better
Summary: 5 Stars

I must admit I am not much of a Western fan, but after watching this movie it provided me with great hours of entertainment.

The acting is of the highest quality with rich characters professionally brought to life, especially from Burl Ives.

The story line tells of the pathetic, bloody struggle between two completely different social factions, something that still dogs the human race today. Jim McCade (Gregory Peck) enters the West, having been brought up in the East, to marry a girl who is a daughter of one of the rival factions. His good will and humane ideas are put to the test when he is placed between the two waring factions.

The acting, dialogue and soundtrack make this one of the all time classics. A must have and fully worthy of five stars. They just don't make them like this any more.

Movie Review: The grand, epic-like movie that you somehow missed
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best movies that you've never seen and, maybe, never really heard about. You know the music, though, as this is one of the greatest movie scores ever written and will leave you thinking "so this is where that music came from." From the opening frame, the movie sweeps you off of your feet and doesn't set you down until "The End." Director William Wyler is an absolute master of the epic (though not strictly one, this film feels every bit like one). If you loved his Ben-Hur (which also had phenomenal music), you'll love this, too. It is, truly, one of the finest movies to come out of Hollywood, Western or not. I don't even have room to go on about the superb cinematography or acting. If you live for grand, sweeping dramas, definitely don't miss this.

Movie Review: Classic Western
Summary: 5 Stars

The Big Country

This movie DVD ranks right up there with the Western movies such as High Noon, Shane, The Magnificant Seven, and Open Range. How can you miss with Gregory Peck, Charleton Heston, Carroll Baker, Jean Simmons, Burl Ives, and Chuck Connors.
Burl Ives got an Academy Award for his performance and when you see this move, you will agree, he deserved it.
Tension between cattle owners and ranchers. It has tension, action, romance, and drama.
Don't miss this one for your collection. They just don't make movies like this one anymore.
