Movie Reviews of The Big Country

Movie Review: He came from the sea
Summary: 5 Stars

Two men, Major Henry Terrill (Charles Bickford) and Rufus Hannassey (Burl Ives), each the head of their respective clans, feud over water rights. The major has a daughter (Carroll Baker) that has fallen in love with a sea captain James McKay (Gregory Peck.) James McKay's father owns a shipping company. This looks like a perfect match.

Shortly but surely we see on insight to the man about to be married. At the same time he gets a good glimpse of the major and Rufus Hannassey. It does not take us long to size up the situation. James refused to play the game. He won't get mad at hazing, won't write the wild hors on their time, and he won't get lost (I suspect he can calculate reveres azimuth.) And this is a big country.

There are many other notable characters in this movie including the owner of "the Big Muddy" (Jean Simmons) where the water is. The Majors right hand man (Charlton Heston). And what is a western with out the idiot son (Chuck Connors).

Pay attention to the love interest and the music.

This movie would give a Greek tragedy a run for its money.
Will Major Henry and Rufus Hannassey settle their differences or will the settle James McKay's hash?

Movie Review: A Big Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

The film that Wyler did just before BEN-HUR is a remarkable western epic in the true tradition. What else can you expect from a movie that boasts the star power of Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston, Charles Bickford, Burl Ives (in probably the finest performance in his much under-rated career), Caroll Baker and Chuck Connors. Shot on a wide panorama with one of the most recognized pieces of theme music in the history of movies. A clash of civilizations on several levels. First there is the east versus west as portrayed in the Peck and Heston characters. Then there is the clash between the Terrells and the Hennesseys. Infact, crude and uneducated, we come to see that both men are wrong but you feel alot more sympathy for Burl Ives' character than you ever feel for Charles Bickford's Terrell. You gotta love Chuck Connors -- forget Lucas McCain, this is his best role. He is such an utter cur with absolutely no redeeming traits: a bully, liar, coward -- and those are his good qualities! Unfortunately, MGM issued this pretty lean, no extras. Pity, a documentary on the film of this magnitude is demanded.

Movie Review: One of the Best Westerns Ever Made!!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you ask me my favourite Gregory Peck movie, it would say to Kill a Mockingbird, but The Big Country and Guns of Navarrone have to rank up there closely. Each film show a new dimension of Peck's talent. For many years, he was overlooked at a true actor, more of a 'persona' like Kirk Douglas or Burt Lancaster, but he was a truly great actor, smart producer and able to pick vehicles that showcased him.

The Big Country, is not a typical Western, though there are many stereotypical elements. Big ranches, hard-bitten men that carved the landscape by their will, beautiful ladies a man would fight for....yet it is much more. Brilliant acting from one powerhouse cast of Peck, the eternally gorgeous Jean Simmons, dynamic Burl Eves, Chuck Connors, Charleton Heston, Charles Bickford and Carol Baker, with a script that is smart, incisive, with heart and soul. It is sweeping, humorous and romantic, with Peck showing a man does not have to be macho, just comfortable with himself.

Beautifully filmed, one of William Wyler's best. This movie does not date, just gets better with every viewing.

Movie Review: When the love inspires you to follow your bliss !
Summary: 5 Stars

Gregory Peck is a simple man who wishes establish in peace . He want to marry with the daughter of a marrow minded rancher. This future father in law is embroiled in water rights feud . Obviously this rancher and his daughter expect from Peck his accomplishment but he decides to retire from this conflict . And the twist of fate will turn him in a very and delicate position in that sense .
He will fall in love again with another woman a headstrong schoolman Jean Simmons she will embody all the goals he is seeking and this rapport will carry to engage it her , so when the time is over she will be kidnapped by a mob of his old and ancient father in law , he will feel the hero call and at last! will decide for fighting and he will hard to kill in this last duel .
Intelligent western where the focus is about the values crisis inmersed in the middle of the far west but it is a clear metaphor about the signs of those times .
A triumph punch for Burl Ives acting and a great Western in the masterful hands of William Wyler.

Movie Review: A Great Film
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is very entertaining. The theme song runs throughout the movie but it makes the movie more exciting. There is a family feud over water rights and the two older men, Burl Ives and the owner meet and throw firebrands verbally. Burl Ives won an Oscar for his role as Mr. Shawnessy. One scene that stands out above the rest is when Gregory Peck and his girl climb up a steep mountain. His girl runs out of energy to climb any longer but Gregory Peck encourages her to keep going. When they make it to the top the girl is safe but when Gregory Peck tries to make the last effort to where his girl is a bad guy steps on his hands and tries to make him fall. Gregory and the bad guy get into a fight and then they reach the edge of the cliff where the bad guy is pushed over the side of the cliff to his death. Chuck Connors is one of Mr. Shawnessy's sons and Jean Simmons is Gregory's girl. The scenery in this movie is breathtakingly beautiful. The director did a fantastic job with the making of this movie and I highly recommend it.
