Movie Reviews of The Big Chill (15th Anniversary Collector's Edition)Movie Review: Glenn Close's "sacrifice" Summary: 4 Stars
A common thread in the reviews of this film take issue with Glenn Close's "sacrifice" at the end of the movie. Anyone who understands the character understands that it's not a "sacrifice" at all. Just what the consequences are (if any) to her marriage and friendship are not spelled out, but it is totally appropriate for her character to make the decision that she did. (Incidentally, people do things like this qutie often, both for the sake of procreation and pleasure, and yes they do it even after AIDS). The sixties were about sexual freedom, among other things. It is interesting to me that the character's marriage and gentrification made a hypocrite and a liar out of her -- though she STILL believed in "free love," she and her husband (Kline) assumed the traditional, monogamous, middle America model for marriage. What did it do to her? It made her a cheat. Part of the message of the movie is that we need to be honest with our friends, partners, and above all, ourselves. Not only did the characters lose their "hope," they lost the courage that it takes to live by one's own standards instead of society's.
Very well filmed movie. Good performances. Very true to life.
Movie Review: Essential Viewing Summary: 4 Stars
When I first saw Lawrence Kasdan's The Big Chill I was a seventeen year old high school senior and I'll admit the story did not do a lot for me. Now, some twent-five years later after the idealism of youth fades into a daily grind the movie has much more meaning.
A group of seven friends plus the current girlfriend of the deceased gathers together on the weekend of the funeral of a friend who committed suicide. The friends feel that he had no real reason for what he did and are left searching for answers. In the three days that follow they must reexamine who they are and the choices that led them to this point in their lives.
The film features an incredible script written by Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and fine performances from its ensemble cast. The disc also includes a where are they now featurette and some deleted scenes. The film quality is good for a twenty five year old film even though the picture is a little soft. The sound has been remastered into Dolby 5.1 and comes across as crisp and clean.
This is a film for a more mature audience who understands the twists and turns of fate and of friendship. It is absolutely essential viewing.
Movie Review: This is the film that lent it's name to a generation. Summary: 4 Stars
THE BIG CHILL is one of those films (like AMERICAN GRAFITTI) that people of a certain age will watch and experience a sense of generational identification. The film is an enjoyable (if somewhat surface) treatment of a generation's coming to terms with the compromise and loss of its youthful ideals. The real treats of the movie are the performances of its ensemble cast and the soundtrack, which is filled with great Motown (and other) hits of the era. This DVD is the best video version yet of this film. The colors are warm and autumnal and the soundtrack is crisp (it practically begs to be pumped up during the songs). This is a special edition which contains deleted scenes (which, unfortunately, do not include the scenes with Kevin Costner) as well as a 55-minute documentary on the making of the film. This features current interviews with the cast and crew reflecting on their experiences making the film and what it has come to mean to them. For those who have a wide-screen TV, this film is enhanced for the 16:9 screen ratio. All in all, this is a first-rate presentation of a fine film.
Movie Review: Classic Movie with an awesome oldies soundtrack! Summary: 4 Stars
Aaaa...what a great movie. There are two main ways to view The Big Chill.... 1. as a mindless, pointless showing of 7 drug-using former hippies from the University of Michigan(plus the clueless girlfriend of their suicidal friend) hatched up in a Southern plantation house for a few days, remembering their dead friend Alex after they reunite from various areas for his funeral. 2. As a fun, surprisingly-realistic look at REAL friendship and how, if you dont keep it up, it can drift slowly away. At how love and friendship are the most important things in life, and may be the key to happiness. At how true friendship never really disappears, and how it can be triggered once again, after a few days of getting high and singing and dancing to oldies with college friends. :) I sure hope 6 of my best friends and I can someday hang out in a plantation house together for a weekend. The soundtrack to this movie is GREAT and is ALL oldies, including Marvin Gaye, Three Dog Night and The Temptations. A Fun, worthwhile movie with some funny one-liners.
Movie Review: The Big Chill - No Whimpering, It's Definitely a Bang Summary: 4 Stars
Very high on my list.
All star cast: Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldbloom, William Hurt, Tom Berenger, JoBeth Williams, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly. Kevin Costner is uncredited for his role...sssh, those in the know...those who don't know, try to find him in the movie.
I just adore this movie. Witty, intelligent, the dialogs are marvelous, and the comments quotable:
"I don't know anyone who could get through the day without two or three juicy rationalizations. They're more important than sex."
"Ah, come on. Nothing's more important than sex."
"Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalization?"
"It doesn't always happen the first time."
"That's not what they told us in high school."
"Amazing tradition. They throw a great party for you on the one day they know you can't come."
"He went out with a bang, not a whimper."
Great music selections as well. It's a must see!
