Movie Reviews of The Big Chill (15th Anniversary Collector's Edition)Movie Review: Can't Imagine This Without This Cast! Summary: 5 Stars
A satellite tv review recently had this synopsis for The Big Chill. It read:A group of friends reunite for a funeral, play records, drink, and talk. This is pretty much what unfolds in the film which is a lot like Return of the Seacaucus Seven that was made earlier(a fine film shot in 16 mm!) It is this cast that makes the film. I cannot imagine another group of actors who could pull this one off. I think that the Big Chill is one of those rare films that may not seem like much, but with the right cast and some fine writing it is superb on all levels. Some of the best scenes in the film involve the scenes where the group drinks, plays records, smokes pot(courtesy of William Hurt's character) and talks. I think it is easy to see why the flashback scenes were cut from the final print. By not seeing what Alex looked like, other than his forehead and stitched-up writsts in the casket, we are really able to visualize Alex better in the context of his surviving hippie cohorts. Some of the key dialouge involves the words of the minister during the opening funeral scene("Where did Alex's hope go?"), and that is the theme which perpetuates through the context of this film. The musical score is wonderful and includes Three Dog Night, Marvin Gaye, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys to name a few, although I have yet to see a COMPLETE soundtrack album released yet! The cast is so great I have got to list them here. Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, Mary Kay Place, William Hurt, Tom Berenger, Jeff Goldblum, Jobeth Williams(Babe!), and Meg Tilly.
Movie Review: An Original That Has Been Copied Summary: 5 Stars
THE BIG CHILL is one of the few movies that I own, and I will watch it periodically and still be entertained. Lawrence Kasdan is a brilliant movie maker whose projects invite viewers to question their values. Although this movie provokes thought, the clever dialogue is pure fun.
I believe THE BIG CHILL was one of the first--if not, THE first--movies that let the music tell a part of the story. And since this comfortable group of friends danced together in the kitchen while preparing dinner, many other movies have included a gratuitous dance scene.
This movie was a first to feature an ensemble cast whose sum is greater than its parts. Every part is memorable and clever, but no one overshadows anyone else.
Most people--of a certain age--know that THE BIG CHILL was to be a vehicle for Kevin Costner toward the beginning of his career. Instead, Costner's body was featured in the role of the friend who dies at the beginning of the story, and prompts a reunion of friends who once shared similar values.
This movie is fun, quirky, clever, and sweet. And unlike other movies, the selection of music is strategically placed within the dialogue and plot to help move the story forward.
I recommend this movie to all adults of any age. I tried to add five stars. This should have five stars.
Movie Review: No big gags, no violence - just a great (adult) movie Summary: 5 Stars
The first time I saw this movie, I was underwhelmed. It was a little slow, if funny, for me. In the years since, I have come to appreciate the humor and dialogue more and more. The DVD gives you the best video image yet available for this film and the sound, although not on the scale of say a Fifth Element or Starship Troopers (or any of a number of newer, flashier soundtracks)is considerably clearer and better defined than the VHS version. The extras are interesting as well, especially if you are a fan of the film. The deleted scenes are like seeing a hidden side of the story that you know must have happened but you never got to see.The story may not appeal to everyone, as several of the reviews suggest (please notice that one review giving the film one star is reprinted and, I presume, counted three times), but there is tremendous talent at work here, and not just on the screen. Kasdan's script has some nice layering to it and you have to really watch or you will miss some nice bits of dialogue. The price of the DVD is nice, too.
Movie Review: AWESOME~! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay...I'm 19 so you're probably thinking "what does this kid know about growing up in the 60's?" Well, after watching this movie and listening to my parents talk about it I can relate! This is a timeless classic that surpasses all generations! It can apply to anyone! I have felt "The Big Chill" myself several times in my life. The world is a cold place! Anyway, about the movie, this is one of those films that needs to be watched more than once to take in all the greatness of it. I have had to watch it about 5 times to take in all the wonderful details about it. This is not a kid flick...I would say even my age group wouldn't understand it. Adults, and other people who have gone through and seen "The Big Chill" in person HAVE to see this movie! It's just an instant classic!
Movie Review: You don't have to like them Summary: 5 Stars
Some reviewers were negative as they found the characters unlikeable. What has that got to do with anything? If all you want are likeable characters stick with Floppsy and Moppsy. They are all very much wrapped up in themselves presenting themselves as people we wouldn't necessarily want to know. Again, what's that got to do with anything? Was it well written? Was it well cast? Did the performers hit their marks? Authors don't ask that we like all of their characters, only that, likeable or not, they are presented as believeable in regards to the world in which they, the charactors, not us, exist. The television program Dallas was a mega-hit and you'd have been hard pressed to find more that two or three charactors "likeable". How many of us can related to the world of oppulance in which they lived? Nuf said.
