Movie Review: Get It For The Matches
Summary: 3 Stars
WWE Confidential was a show that went behind the scenes of the wrestling business and highlighted many stories. The highlights of this DVD are the story behind Eric Bischoff coming to WWE, Stone Cold's walkout from WWE (from the WWE's point of view), a tribute to the British Bulldog, a look at Jimmy Snuka & Bobby The Brain, DX invading WCW Nitro, the brief story behind WCW's downfall, the history of the NWA/WCW World Title, and the WWE's side of the story about Bret vs Shawn in at Survivor Series '97. Also, Rikishi gives the story behind the Somoan family tree which includes The Rock, Rocky Johnson, The Wild Somoans, Yokozuna and others.
Other stories include The Rock meeting a 90+ year old fan, Booker T meeting football star Levon Kirkland, Kurt Angle returning to where he trained for the Olympics, Bradshaw & Big Show & Shanquia play hoops, a look at 3 generations of Ortons (Bob Sr., Bob Jr., Randy), William Regal shows off his reptiles, and Trish Stratus gives a tour of her house.
For me, the real highlights of this DVD are the extra matches.
Jimmy Snuka vs Ray Stevens (12/28/82). This is a rare match to see as it took place in the early eighties but it was a good match for what it was. However if your not a fan of the 80s, this is not recommended viewing.
Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart vs British Bulldog (SummerSlam 8/29/92). This was history in the making as this event set an attendance record of 80,000 fans in London, England along with it being the only time that the Intercontinental title was on the line in a main event match. Other than a few botch spots, this was a classic encounter as both put on a great display of technical wrestling & precision.
WWF Champion Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels (Survivor Series 11/9/97) This is the main reason to get this DVD as it is only time this event has been released other than the original VHS version of the event. This was the controversial match where the name, "Montreal Screwjob" came about. The match started as a wild brawl all over the Molson Centre, with both men hitting officials & even using the Canadian flags. Once it settled in the ring, it was a great back & forth wrestling match until the ending that has gone down in infamy occurred.
WCW Champion vs WCW U.S. Champion: Booker T vs Scott Steiner (WCW Nitro 3/26/01). This was on the last Nitro which was also the night that the WWF bought the company. Just like their previous encounters, this was an average contest that went back & forth before Booker T unified the titles.
In the end, the extra matches are worth the price of admission, especially the Bret/Shawn match from '97 so I would get this cheap for the matches unless you were a fan of the Confidential series.
