Movie Reviews of The Benny Goodman Story

Movie Review: Benny Goodman
Summary: 5 Stars

When I picture Benny Goodman I picture the image as portrayed by Steve Allen. The music is, of course, B.G's. I also have "The Benny Goodman Story," which is made from actual clips from his life. Hollywood has really only changed the story slightly to make it more compact and a better movie. If you want a picture of the shy introvert who lived for his music, this is probably the better of the two. If you want the music to be more technically perfect, this is for you. But if you want to feel the driving beat that made up the swing era and to see musicians totally engrossed in their music, then get "The Benny Goodman Story." I am proud to own both of them and to watch whichever one most fits my mood at the time.

Movie Review: Dated, corny - wonderful!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Although the film does indeed not have an entirely correct history, this movie always delights. I play it every year for music history classes always wondering if the kids will turn up their noses at the sentimentality of 50's movie making, but they always adore it and many become hooked on great swing and jazz music. What I particulary like about the film is you get to actually see the real stars of the era including Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Buck Clayton and Harry James. Look closely and you'll see a young Stan Getz and Barney Kessel, among others. One of the better films made about the swing era.

Movie Review: The reality of the Man and the Clarinet
Summary: 5 Stars

Good movie, both Steve Allen and Donna Reed in an excellent interpretation.

Steve Allen emulate the clarinete playing so good that sometimes seems that he is the interpreter, even when you know that Benny Goodman is playing the instrument.

Donna plays his roll so good as the girl friend and Benny's future wife: great play.

Lots of good music to hear One o'clock Jump and Sing, Sing, Sing are at the top.

Finally, buy it and enjoy, great movie.

Movie Review: The Benny Goodman Story
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the most enjoyable movie you can get, at this price. It is a good deal because all the qualities fit for a higher price dvd.The video and audio are superb. For the Benny Goodman'fans, The songs are really played by his band. I enjoyed every minute. The Benny Goodman and his band playing in the Carnegie Hall is incomparable. You will always played it again and again to remind yourself of the time that America once had this kind of music and these kind of people.

Movie Review: BENNY GOODMAN STORY
Summary: 5 Stars

What the movie lacks in historical fact, it more than makes up for with music and entertainment. For nostalgia, and swing buffs it will warm their "memories." The Mancini cues are, of course, flawless. It was also nice seeing Gene Krupa, Ziggy Elman, Harry James, Kid Ory, Teddy Wilson, and Lionel Hampton on the big screen, rather than having someone else portraying them.
