Movie Reviews of The Beatles - Yellow Submarine ( Yellow Submarine )

Movie Review: 40 years later, still a great movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

After forty years, this cinematic masterpiece of animation still provides a unique visual and aural experience. Created by George Dunning (director), Heinz Heidelmann and Al Brodax, it represents the ultimate 1960s visual trip. It stunned audiences in 1968 for its rich palette of colors and visual effects and for the ingenuity of its apparently disjointed plot. In 2009, it is still a wonderful film. The graphic character of this movie was to inspire the work of Richard Williams and other contemporary avant-garde animators. Visually, it brings to mind Warhol and Dali: it would be interesting to compare it with Dali's sketches for Disney's "Destino"...
Another film with similar stylistic roots is "Allegro, non troppo", by master Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto, a take on Disney's "Fantasia", in the style of the 1960s.
The innovative use of multi-plane Xerox cells in some dark scenes is truly inspired and contributes a stark contrast to the brightly colored sequences that make up the bulk of the film.
"Yellow Submarine" is a visual Odyssey, accompanied by the music of the Beatles, which gives it a light, dreamy atmosphere that acts as a counterpoint to Kubricks' 2001 (also first shown in 1968).
2001 presented images of wide expanses of interplanetary space and was punctuated by the grandiose music of Strauss and the breathtaking visual impact of Cinerama; "Yellow Submarine" gave a more personal and intimate experience that "took over" from the dreamland sequences of 2001..
"Yellow Submarine": anyone interested in animation must experience this great motion picture. A true classic. A visual feast; enjoy it!
I heard that Disney will produce a remake soon: they will have a hard time matching the ingenuity and sheer visual feast of the original!

P.S.: For a contemporary 1960s audio experience, try "Celestial Ocean" by Brainticket: another take on a very similar intra-stellar/inter dimensional voyage experience. It was recently reissued on CD.
