Movie Reviews of The BeachMovie Review: This review is for fans of the book. Summary: 5 Stars
I am a huge fan of the book, and was actually quite pleased with the film. Why I enjoyed it was I happened to read some of the original script. It was a travesty.*SPOILER* It ended with Etienne and Bugs fighting to the death on the ocean floor and Richard commiting suicide at the same hotel where he met Daffy. The jaw dropping sound you're hearing now was my exact reaction. I was overjoyed when they changed it to what it is now. I was dissapointed how Jed was melded into Etienne, but other than that, I have no complaints. It's good to see Danny Boyle getting back to his Trainspotting-type of directing. The DVD is nice-Good picture and sound. 9 fairly interesting deleted scenes which aren't as yawn inducing as some other DVD's. One which could have stayed was an earlier meeting with Etienne and Francoise which makes more sense as to why they joined. Also a scaled down version of Richard's escapade in the underwater caves. About 4 trailers and 10 tv spots. I could really care less about the All Saints video. Haven't watched the commentary yet. The alternate ending is kind of closer to the book (No insanity stew, though). Just some of Richard's dialogue is closer and the tone is slightly more downcast. So, if you loved Garland's book and hated the film, just think what it COULD have been with the earlier script.
Movie Review: Not everybody's movie, but really should be Summary: 5 Stars
I admit it. I only saw this because I liked the soundtrack and i like the director's other works. A lot of people saw this movie before i did and didn't like it. In fact, when i asked a friend of mine what it was about, she said, "It was just about people, you know, at the beach." Well, I saw the movie a few weeks later and saw a whole lot more than that. I really liked it. It wasn't because of the indie pop music or the beautiful people. I liked it because it's a romantic movie. I don't mean romantic like those "charming" tom hanks-meets-meg ryan-movies, i mean romantic in the French-philosphe-Lord-Byron kind of way. It's like it says on the cover: "a fascinating and exotic adventure." It's a beautiful and hypnotic film about love and desire, restless emotions, and the dark parts of paradise. They dont make movies like this anymore. I've never read the book it's based on (I dont read much but textbooks nowadays) but I hear its really good. My advice is this: if you're thinking about buying this movie because you liked Leo in Titanic, you are REALLY going to be disappointed. This movie may be too sophisticated for you. If you're sick of disaster movies and those hip teen flicks with kids trying really hard to get laid then this might be more to your liking.
Movie Review: Hands down, DiCaprio's best work Summary: 5 Stars
Picture this, a guy approaching twenty sitting on a plane trying to choose a movie to watch. One of his choices is 'The Beach', a film he's heard about but never really considered watching because he heard it was a 'chick flick'. Then he figures, it has to be better than a gay guy making out with Madonna. This is how it started for me. I started watching it a realized, Leo's more than a pretty face here. After Robert Carlyle's scene, I was hooked (plus Virginie Ledoyen looked really hot). When the credits started rolling I sat back in my chair and thought, wow, that movie rocked. DiCaprio has this strange way of picking all the right roles (He was quite impressive in Basketball Diaries and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Titanic was crap.) His character of Richard was very complex and difficult to play. A disturbed twenty-something looking for peace of mind, it doesn't get tougher than that. Besides Richard, my favorite charcter was Etienne. Canet's portrayal was picture perfect and his dedication to his Swedish friend was touching. Overall it was one of the best movies I've ever seen, even though I know many won't agree with me. I shows that there are always flaws, even in the perfect world. Oh, and one more thing, Robert Carlyle rocks!!!
Movie Review: A cult classic Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was judged even before it was released because of Leonardo DiCaprio (who's only fault is that 14-year-old girls like him because he played in one stroppy movie, although his earlier movies as 'Total Eclipse', 'Who's Eating Gilbert Grape' and 'The Basketball Diaries' were brilliant and rather alternative), but 'The Beach' is fantastic and really impressing. The acting is great, there's humor, there's the most breath-taking scenery possible, there's a strong plot, there's fabulous music, and there's an shocking end that makes you realise some things you normally don't think about. That's the reason why this movie was a flop, I reckon, because most of the viewers didn't get the message of the movie and considered it as one big publicity for Thailand. But the characters are not superficial at all, they are on the contrary terrifyingly recogneisable. Also the statements about western life and our way of travelling is stuff for reflection. This movie certainly has potential to become a cult classic. I consider it as 1999's best film.
Movie Review: Rather good. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great movie, and Leonardo is the man for the job. The movie is NOTHING comparred to the utterly brilliant book, but don't mind that. The scenery is beautiful and the acting is wonderful. The picture and sound (of the DVD, as well as vide) are great. The commentary on the special features is actually INTERESTING.
Richard is a man who wants to try something different. He gets a map from a mad englishman, and , with his two new french friends, sets off for the island. The way that the people of the island work is amazing, and it gets me everytime I watch it. Leo does such a great job as the star that you feel as if you know the main charecter personally.
Although the book ending was better, the movie ending was not bad either. I prefer to think of the book and the movie as two sepperate storylines, because the movie is EXTREMELY different than the movie, yet the movie is exelent on its own. Buy this movie. Trust me.
