Movie Reviews of The Barbie DiariesMovie Review: My daughter loves this movie. Summary: 4 Stars
I got this for my 7 year old daughter. She thinks boys have cooties at this age. Especially her brothers.
I did take away one star for the "girl hug" comment because I thought it probably went a little too far in a movie that is geared towards a younger crowd. It was okay, though, because it went WAY over her head.
However, hormones weren't the only message. What I liked was the message that the popular kids were only popular because they said nasty things about each other. I liked that Barbie learned that the hunky guy on the rebound wasn't the boy who made her feel the best deep down in her heart. I liked that Barbie wrote down her wishes and made them come true.
I got this movie yesterday afternoon. My daughter has already watched this movie three times. She dug through her stuff to find her charm bracelet and has been scribbling in a notebook all day long.
Movie Review: This is actually pretty cool! Summary: 4 Stars
For a Barbie film this surprised me. It's a total write off of Mean Girls, so imagine Barbie as Lindsay Lohan, with a couple of sidekicks, including a band junkie and a typical clothes-obsessed brunette. Unusual to me, Barbie is not the typical "popular" stereotype as I grew up knowing her, she's simply a typical teenage girl wanting to fit in. Overall I'd say the movie isn't for the littler Barbie fans, it probably doesn't set the typical "popularity" values parents want their 6 year olds to see, but it's a lighthearted afternoon flick for all teenie-boppers at heart.
Movie Review: Mother of girls Summary: 4 Stars
They love all the Barbie movies. This one is no exception. My older two like it more then the younger 3. They like the farie ones and princess ones better. I think the older 2 can relate more to this one. I love that they keep these movies so clean and there is always a lesson to be learned and the characters have good values.
Movie Review: Good movie... but not perfect Summary: 3 Stars
I have to admit, I love this movie for a movie. The animation is awesome, the story is sweet, and the soundtrack rocks. But.......
The girls all dress immodestly. Call me old-fashioned, but midriff-baring tops, too-short skirts, and shirts that show cleavage aren't appropriate. Of course, this movie is animated, so you don't really see the cleavage you would in real life. Second, I didn't like the way teachers and principals were shown in a negative manner. Third, I have something to ask Mattel: WHY ON EARTH DID YOU HIRE SKYE SWEETNAM?!?!?!?!? I thought she was awesome. I watched the special feature about her, and...she's dressed like some streetwalker! Still, I wanted to give her a fair shot. So I went to her website and checked out her albums. I didn't get past Noise From the Basement. I didn't even get past the first four songs! They are filled to overflowing with curse words and obscenities. They are explicit and horrible, and she talks about hopping into bed with a boy as if it were perfectly natural. Skye, I'm praying for you.
Movie Review: Decent Summary: 3 Stars
The plot of this movie was entirely cliche, though it would appeal to preteens whose current obsessions include boys, bands, and popularity. Maybe a couple of seven year old girls would be interested, I don't know, though I do know I wouldn't have been interested in half of the content when I was seven. The themes stressed were mostly good, but still not something I would want my daughter to bother over. Nothing about it was really anything imaginative (no talking animals). The whole deal with the magical diary was really all in the plot that set it apart from a dumbed down Mean Girls mixed with other high school flicks and that part was actually negligible. The story could have done just as well without it. But it was still an engaging story for all that it was too predictable to do anything for anyone over the age of seven and and too old for anyone younger than ten.
