Movie Reviews of The Ballet WorkoutMovie Review: bad quality recording Summary: 2 Stars
The workout itself is fine, pleasantly structured like a class yet doable at home without a barre. However, the recording is terrible--80's style and grainy, off colors, horrid sound with twangy, strung-out notes much like an old turn of the last century silent film. MUCH better are NYC Ballet workouts 1 and 2: Stunning visually, high quality, great workout.
Movie Review: Not a great video... Summary: 1 Stars
I have been taking ballet off and on for many years, and have recently started taking classes again at a local ballet company again. I bought this video for practicing at home to improve my fundamentals (stance, arms, etc), and as a way to get in a great workout at home.
I tried this video once, and will probably not try it again. The video is obviously very old and outdated, which wasn't that big of a problem for me. The problems are due to camera work and lack of explanations from the instructor.
The biggest problem that I find is that I shouldn't have to constantly watch other people to determine what the movements are for each routine. The instructor should talk you through the steps as you are doing them so that you can coordinate your head movements to the rest of your body. However, this instructor does not go into detail about which movements she would like you to do and when, so you always have to watch the screen. Some steps are explained slightly, some not at all. I could barely follow along with the routines as I had no idea which step was coming next.
The problem with the camera work was that it was sometimes impossible to figure out what the dancers are doing. The production of this video makes it look like they just showed up in some random ballet class, with no forethought about how to structure the video, and with an amateur videographer who had no idea what he was supposed to be filming.
I would definitely not recommend this tape for beginners. Ballet has so much to do with having the correct posture and stance, and you really need better instruction than this on how to do these things correctly. Go to a real studio and take a class, and you will be so much happier with the results.
