Movie Reviews of The Ballet Workout

Movie Review: Best if you've had ballet
Summary: 4 Stars

This DVD features two ballet classes. The first says it is for people with little or no ballet experience, but it is more geared toward the person who has a distant memory of ballet classes she took as a little girl. As a 36 year old who never took ballet as a child, I would have benefitted from a little more time devoted to the basic positions. Although I have watched hundreds of ballet classes, I have not participated before, and I found it difficult to maintain the positions during the simple combinations. A little more time devoted to simply coming back to first would have been a help for me.

That said, it is a much better video for beginners than the New York City Ballet Workout, which has more complicated combinations and assumes a fair amount of knowledge.

The other thing that could improve this video would be to have the teacher show the combination once before having the students follow. The first time watching the video, you're not quite sure what she is going to do next, which makes it hard to follow. Of course, this isn't a problem with repeated viewings.

In all, I think it's a good product and especially good for people with a little ballet background. It is a very simple ballet class with easily assimilated combinations, and ballet classes are always a good workout that use every muscle.

Movie Review: Good basic ballet exercises
Summary: 4 Stars

I just rec'd this and have only done the level 1 so far - but that's enough for the meantime! I'm definitely feeling it, esp. in the upper thighs, muscles I'd forgotten I had! I purchased this because I have very poor flexibility, and having a 7 mos old baby that I carry around often, well, it's all taking its toll on my back. In the past I've taken ballet for enjoyment and it always helped to keep me flexible and toned. Plus, I get bored with doing pilates, gym classes, etc. - this is a welcome change of pace.
The recording is dated, but it's not an issue because you're so focused on your movements. The biggest drawback is that the instructor doesn't demonstrate much before you are expected to execute your movements, her direction is minimal. For a complete beginner this would be frustrating, you'll have to do some rewinding in order to "get it" but even so, that should only take a couple of viewings, as the movements are not very difficult. I appreciate the fact that the video offers two workouts, so once you master the first level you don't have to run out and buy another video to be challenged.

Movie Review: Pretty good
Summary: 4 Stars

While doing this workout you can feel some discomfort but the next day you should really be able to feel as if you've had an effective workout in your legs. It works out the entire body and even though I haven't had this product long; I can see that it won't be long before I reach my goal weight. Good product for toning, slimming, inch reduction, posture improvement and more muscular strength(not bulky or manly muscles, just noticed strength, balance, flexibility and posture). At times the instructor goes a tad bit quickly and the angle the DVD is shot at changes and you kind of have to figure out what you're doing on your own, but after doing it more and more you'll be just fine.

Movie Review: Great for adult ballet beginners
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this dvd as I have just started an adult beginners ballet class, and wanted a little extra practice at home. For these reasons, this dvd is perfect. It is just like a real class, only you can rewind and watch something again if you didn't quite get it the first time!
If you are looking for a standard 'workout' video, then this is probably not for you (although ballet is a good workout) but if you are basically looking for a ballet class in your loungeroom, this is it.
It is old-fashioned looking, but the basics of ballet are the same, no matter what year it is, so it still serves the purpose.
Exactly what I was looking for.

Movie Review: Very well done,
Summary: 4 Stars

but one star off for misleading, that it's suitable for the one with no ballet training in the past. Ballet is not intuitive, or natural for that matter. I started taking formal classes well into the 40s, now 8 years later I do look like a dancer, but it took thousands corrections from my instructors how to work every single body muscle. Those who took classes in the childhood don't realize that all this stuff implanted in their bodies, they just don't remember it. If you are a mature adult go and do it live. Dvds are great as a supplement, no more no less.
