Movie Reviews of The Ballet WorkoutMovie Review: A great workout that doesn't feel like work Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this DVD for a year now and it's one of my favorite workouts. You wouldn't think from looking at it that it would be a full body workout that will make you sweat--but it does! If you do all of the moves correctly (aka: keeping your arms up as instructed) you work out not just your lower body, but your upper body, as well. If you're like me and haven't taken a ballet class in a decade (or two!) you might need to watch some of the moves first, then rewind and do the moves yourself. Melissa does an excellent job of explaining the moves (especially in the Level 1 workout), but some of the moves are a little hard to follow, only because the camera doesn't always show the best angles--but this video was made in the early '80s when the workout video was a relatively "new" thing.
One piece of advice: make sure you have enough room to do the workout, because you don't want to accidentally kick your leg into the wall or furniture!
Movie Review: Nice classic ballet workout Summary: 5 Stars
I really like this. I got a copy from the library (an older edition), and am ready to buy one, but I'd like to know what, if any, is the difference between the Ballet Workout and the NEW Ballet Workout. If anyone knows, please post in a review! I use this as part of my ballet workout rotation. This focuses more on stretching and flexibility, while getting a good ballet foundation; it feels more like an actual ballet class; some of the others (NYC Ballet Workout) really focus on abs and upper body strength more. I like the balance between the various workouts. The Ballet Bootcamp one is a nice cardio program, though a bit excruciating for me! Some people have mentioned that the Ballet Workout videos are complicated, and that she doesn't explain much before doing the routines, but I feel that (though it may be more challenging at first) one might become bored after several viewings if there was excessive explanation.
Movie Review: Awesome Workout for Beginning Ballet Summary: 5 Stars
I took classes as a child and decided to start ballet when I enrolled my daughter in class. I am 35 and since class is not everyday, I do the video at home. The video is from the 80's, but it is really good. It is basic ballet, but if you concentrate on your technique and perform the moves it really helps to get you in shape and I usually do level 1 one day and level 2 the next. I like that she doesn't give too much instruction because after you watch videos over and over, you sick of hearing all of the same stuff. That is the best part of the video. It is just enough instruction, but not too much talking. You probably need to have a basic understanding of ballet, but could probably do it if you don't. Just watch the video first, that is what I did. Ballet has helped me to drop about 40 pounds, so it is a good weight loss exercise. I am glad I bought the video.
Movie Review: The best ballet workout ever! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using Melissa Lowe's Ballet Workout for about 13 years. I have tried The New York City Ballet Workout and David Howard's Ballet Class tapes, and nothing compares to Melissa Lowe. The secret of this class is that it has so many plies done SLOWLY....if you rush through a plie, you will not build muscle strength. I try to do at least 40 minutes of this class everyday to keep stretched and strong. So what if she has a poker face, she is a good instructor, and keeps the dancer safe from injury. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: It works!!! Summary: 5 Stars
The workout is great. I was going to start an adult ballet class in January and there weren't enough people registered. Since I had already bought my ballet shoes and was determined to start ballet again (hadn't done it since I was a child), I ordered both dvds of the ballet workout to do at home. My favorite is the 2nd level on the 1st dvd. It really tones your legs and bottom. I've gotten comments from girls half my age asking me if I'm a bodybuilder!!!
