Movie Reviews of The Avengers '64, Set 1

Movie Review: Early Avengers with Cathy Gale
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a six episode set of the British classic. It starts with "The White Elepahnt", an animal we do not get to see and ends with Steed inheriting a race horse in "The Trojan Horse". In between are episodes of double agents and diabolical organizations which are a staple of the Emma Peel years. Still a good taste of Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale. She is finally starting to stand up to the upstart Steed, trying to be a full parter in the dou that is finally given to Ms. Peel.

Biggest down side of the DVD is the lack of features. Only production stills which are on all the A & E Avenger videos.

Movie Review: echo & side note
Summary: 4 Stars

Honor Blackman was far more interesting to watch in the Avengers than Diana Rigg, with interesting repartee instead of Rigg's shallowly quipped puns.

I got every disc from N*tfl*x, but '64, Blackman's second and final season, the one season NOT available there, a total heartbreak.

Rigg emotes campy "damsel in distress" more episodes than not with heavily edited faux karate; Blackman did live unedited judo and played her role with much greater conviction.

Movie Review: Peel's first year
Summary: 4 Stars

Honor Blackman's last season as Patrick MacNee's crime fighting companion. Mrs.Gale and John Steed foil ecentric criminals through six episiodes. The charaacters remain unflappable throughout in the way we have come to expect form Her Majesty's servants (at least that's what they appear to be- their offical capacity is never really stated). Lots of fun and well written.

Movie Review: Quirky and interesting.
Summary: 4 Stars

While the Cathy Gale episodes of the Avengers suffer somewhat from having to be reconstructed from ancient videotapes, they still are well worth viewing. Steed is younger, and much more ruthless, and he is well-matched by the tough, independent Cathy.

Movie Review: It doesn't have English subtitle
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm disappointed with Amazon.com that listed the incorrect info. under DVD features. It doesn't have English subtitle! Returned item to marketplace seller for full refund.
