Movie Reviews of The Astronaut's Wife

Movie Review: Quirky, weird, strange but really quite good
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I'm going to upset the apple cart here, I enjoyed this film. Johnny Depp was great as the possessed Astronaut who returns to earth after a space walk goes wrong. Charlize Theron didn't do too badly either as his super-sexy wife who isn't quite sure what is going on other than she is pregnant and there's a chance her children just might not be human. Yes it is slow moving, yes it is an odd film but despite that it works for me. The special effects aren't all that, but this is more of a film for those of a cerebral nature and a lot is left to your own imagination. The film asks the question "what if" aliens didn't haven't to take human form, "what if" they could attune themselves to a certain electrical frequency, and take control of a human mind; after all we are just electrical brain waves, our mind generating minute amounts of electricity, similar to those generated in say a satellite? As Charlize realizes that all is not well with her husband, she struggles to make sense of what is going on. Why did her husband's fellow space walker die so suddenly after returning to earth? And his wife was pregnant when she committed suicide, not only pregnant but pregnant with twins, the same as Charlize. Should she have an abortion or should she continue with her pregnancy? Charlize doesn't know which way to turn. Her instincts are to abort but her desire to be a mother is great. The suspense in the film is well orchestrated with Depp giving a solid performance as the man/alien intent on his offspring being born. He tells his wife whilst pointing at her pregnant belly "I live in there" so that she knows he is aware of everything she thinks and does. This is a creepy film with an equally creepy ending that is both intelligent and thought provoking. However I will concede it is not everyone's cup of tea but all the same it really is quite a good little film despite the heavy panning it got from critics and viewers.

Movie Review: "The Astronaut's Wife" -Revisited
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm rewriting my review of this excellent film today, 3/7/2011. I agree with the reviewer who thought that, perhaps, the Johnny Depp fans were expecting something completely different and weren't really open to what was presented, and, maybe this was responsible for a lot of the rather negative reviews. Me? I like Johnny Depp, but don't think he's been given much for roles. Maybe, like Clint Eastwood, Johnny Depp might someday have something to say and be able to say it. In the meantime, it's probably best he just attempt to do what he's told to do to his best ability, even if it is just a lot of crap that some CEO wants for his multi-million dollar bonus. After all, Bush or 'Bama, CEO's become accountable for what is done and what is not done; when they seem to have the reins. Multi-multi of billions of dollars stolen and, I know, let's just concentrate on a 7-11 hold-up and put that poor SOB in prison for the rest of his life! It's so much more manageable. And, I know, let's just blame billions of dollars in new home computers each year on a few high-school kids; who are so very difficult to locate. Huh?

Having just seen this film, again, I've uprated it from a four to a five. That this film is a psychological thriller, I whole-heartedly agree. I think my problem with another reviewer is that what-else-should it be? I liked, "2001." I liked Tarkovsky's, "Solaris." And, I liked Soderbergh's and Clooney's, "Solaris," remake. I liked Andrew Niccol's, "Gattaca." I liked "Bladerunner" and "Close Encounters." This film was and is very appropriate and illuminating in our time. As "Sci-Fi Horror," it puts the "Alien" and "The Terminator" series to shame. Perhaps, it is the best video sci-fi since "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Star Wars." That this film is not available on both Blu-ray and DVD, instead of neither, is a grave injustice to our children, our world and ourselves.

Movie Review: a gripping thriller that is much like Rosemary's baby
Summary: 5 Stars

if you like Depp: see Secret Window, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nightmare on Elm street, Sleepy Hollow, From Hell, and other movies
if you like Charlize Theron: see Psycho and other movies she's in

this is a terrifying tale
even the ending had me freaked out
it's scary how you think you know someone you love and then you find out you don't even know them and you thought you did all along
Depp plays a very peculiar role in this movie
He starts out loving , dramatic, funny, caring
and by the end he's
loathing her but trying not to show it
using her
hurting her
etc

this is one freaky but interesting movie
in a way the movie has a good ending
and in a way it's a bad ending
I like the ending
it keeps the viewers guessing on a sequal or what should happen next
but it doesn't leave you out in the cold guessing how the movie ends

the story is so creepy that I freaked out in alot of the strange parts. like the one where Depp looks in the mirror like he does. and then his wife comes in. and he this sick evil almost emotionless look on his face. that's truly terrifying. the lighting for that set or room he was in. added the perfect creepiness to that look on his face. had it been done in bright light. it would of looked lame. not scary and not had the effect it gave me. I really thought Spencer was Spencer until about the middle or slight end of the movie where more details get uncovered. a haunting tale of deception. see this movie. I shall watch it again and again and again and again and again. this will truly haunt your mind if you think you know your lover sometimes.

Movie Review: Impressive
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a class thriller. You can't look away! I had a dream some years ago very similar to the plot of this movie, but I have never seen this movie until now. What if an astronaut brought something back with him from outer space? If his wife becomes pregnant, is she carrying her husband's child or the child of this alien being? It preys on the underlying fears of humanity of being systematically wiped out.

But this movie is NOT about the spread of an alien virus around the globe. It's a psychological thriller on a smaller scale, between a husband and a wife. The scenes are passionate and riveting. The wife begins to suspect that something is wrong after one of her husband's colleagues dies (presumably of natural causes.) The colleague's wife then presumably commits suicide. The wife, who has just learned she is pregnant, starts to wonder what happened to her husband up in space during his lost two minutes of communication with NASA. She is approached by a former employee of NASA who says he has answers for her, so she reluctantly agrees to meet him. She follows the information he gives her, which leads her to the truth. She begins having mental visions of her babies and of what her husband is doing in the present. There is a fantastic twist ending that I did not see coming.

This is NOT a movie for those interested in blood and gore. It's along the lines of Rosemary's Baby or maybe the Pelican Brief if you want some comparisons. I'm thoroughly impressed, and wonder how I could have missed this gem when it was out in theatres.

Movie Review: A very optumistic dark thriller, it's great
Summary: 5 Stars

Johnny Depp and Charleze Theron are one of the most gifed actors in hollywood today and this piece is one of the most dakest, smooth sexy thriller where johnny depp plays an astronaut caught up in deep space for two minutes where he had a near death experience as a transmetic wave collided and entered his body forcing his original charecter to dissapear and an alien to takeover his body, all this in two minutes. Charleze, who plays a vunreble wife and 2nd grade school teacher in florida realizes a change in her husband's reactons and investigates further with the help of a retired scientist from NASA.
A twisted ending, terrific screenplay and a dynamic score, all star cast and one of the greatest dark thrillers in hollywood today, the astronaut's wife is a keeper. 9.5/10.
