Movie Reviews of The Astronaut Farmer

Movie Review: It's A Fantasy Story, So Just Have Fun With It
Summary: 4 Stars

A ridiculous story? Totally unrealistic? Yeah, you could say that, but who cares? The fact remains it was a fun movie to view.....and not to be taken seriously. Those who did, scoffed and called it stupid. They missed the point.

It's full of ludicrous situations and pontificating that is sometimes just laughable. There is no way this event could happen. And, yes, the portrayals of the government men are liberal Hollywood stereotypes. Yet, despite the stupidity of this story it was not just entertaining but a nice, feel--good one that made you glad you watched it.

It was refreshing to see a nice family and spouse support their dad and husband. Boy, that's something you don't seem much on screen anymore.

It also was fantastically filmed. Kudos to David Mullen, director of photography. Boy, this would look spectacular on a sharp high-def disc.

Movie Review: the point seems to be about individual effort instead of government controlled space flight
Summary: 4 Stars

"Controlled"
In ancient times you didn't need a government contract or clearance
to do something like build a ship and sail as far as you were able.
This story about an engineer pilot who built his own mercury
project atlas-type rocket and goes into orbit.
His first try almost kills him, but he and his family don't give up.
Sort of a modern Noah and family type of effort results in this fictional success.
Burt Rutan and band of friends did the equivalent of this several times
over with setting many records for distance and height with his
designs. There pretty much just two real aerospace corporations
left in the USA because of government( strangle hold)
policy mismanagement of contracts.
It is not a nice situation when government tells you not to dream
or wish for a better future for our children.

Movie Review: a good film
Summary: 4 Stars

Charlie Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton) has always had a dream: to go to the moon. So, piece by piece, he builds a rocket in his barn.
With the help of his son Shepard, his two daughters and most of all, with the encouragement of his wife Audrey (Virginia Madsen), and despite the fact the bank will soon be seizing his property, Charlie does not lose sight of his dream and never gives up.

A wonderful cast. Thornton is surprisingly good in this role, and Madsen's "Audie" is a truly devoted wife who loves her Charlie very much. Bruce Willis has a small role as a NASA Captain and it is nice to see him in such a movie (it changes him from all those action films).

A great film about dreams and hope.
Recommended to everyone.
Watch as a family, you'll love it.

Movie Review: unexpected...yet warm-hearted
Summary: 4 Stars

We didn't know what to expect from a movie starring Billy Bob Thornton yet only rated PG! (DO be prepared for quite a bit of choice mild language, though it's not all on Thornton's part.) At times, it seems that he was mis-cast for this part, but at other times, he truly brings across the needed sympathy for his character. This movie left us with very unique feelings toward it. It was slow yet you weren't bored, or waiting for it to end. Instead, we watched with somewhat enthusiam to see how things would all turn out. The tale may be a bit strange, and nothing especially stands out, but if you realize the entire premise on which this story is built (and it's NOT about our dreams!)- namely the importance of a supportive, loving FAMILY, then you will enjoy this little bit of melodrama.

Movie Review: Seeing your dreams takeoff
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is a great family movie depicting a man who didn't let his dreams of becoming an astronaut die. It is also inspirational in showing when a family believes in that dream and how far they are willing to go to help fulfill that dream as well.
This isn't the hottest movie that you got to rush out and see, but it great movie that the family and especially young boys will love to watch!
